Port Huron Hits Boddy Construction with Penalties

Port Huron officials are cracking down on delays in the $2.9 million Lapeer Avenue road project. City Manager James Freed announced last Friday that Boddy Construction, the contractor, has fallen far behind schedule, pushing completion from October into spring. Freed called the progress “deeply disappointing” and cited poor management and oversight. The city is now pursuing $1,005 in daily penalties, totaling over $84,000 so far. Freed also said Port Huron will avoid hiring Boddy Construction for future projects.

Civic Theatre Brings “Anastasia” to the Stage

Port Huron Civic Theatre is bringing the Russian stage to life this weekend with its musical “Anastasia.” Local actors rehearsed on stage for the first time Sunday, perfecting songs, lines, and dance moves ahead of the show. The musical, inspired by the ’97 animated film, follows young Anya as she navigates post-revolution Russia with two conmen who hope to claim a reward by passing her off as the lost daughter of the czar. Performances run Friday thru Sunday at McMorran Place, with tickets from $22 to $29.

Council Sets New Public Comment Rules

Port Huron City Council has approved new rules on public comment after weeks of debate. Starting January 12th, anyone who wants to speak must sign up before the meeting, and comments will be split between city residents and business owners, and those who live outside the city. The 4–3 vote came despite more than an hour of pushback from speakers who called the plan divisive. Supporters say it keeps meetings organized, while opponents say it shuts out taxpayers who work or volunteer here. The new process begins next month.

Teacher’s Death Civil Trial Set

A civil trial date is now set in the death of former Port Huron Northern teacher Ashley Nisbett. Her estate is suing Justin Simon, the man already convicted in criminal court. A judge, not a jury, will rule when the case begins March 3rd, with a final settlement deadline in February. Nisbett died in ’23 after Simon’s drunk-driving crash on Lakeshore Road in Fort Gratiot. Simon is serving up to five years in prison. The lawsuit seeks accountability beyond the criminal verdict.
