How Do You DO It?
As soon as a new acquaintance finds out that I have six children between the ages of 7-12, the very next words out of her mouth are “How do you DO it?”. Usually followed by some sort of commentary that she “only” has 2 (or 1 or 3) kids, and she can “barely manage”. Well ladies, let me tell you that we ALL have a lot on our plates – every single one of us! Anyone who is juggling parenthood, running a household, and possibly a full or part-time career knows that it isn’t easy!
The reality is that half the time we don’t give ourselves credit for how amazing we ARE! It’s time for each of us to stop comparing what we are doing against what we see others are doing. Because we really don’t know the internal struggle that someone else might be going through in their efforts to try to keep it out together. Sure, that other Mom at the grocery store might appear to be organized and her children well behaved. But what we don’t see is that her house is a mess, her kids ate leftover birthday cake for breakfast, and she missed work (again) yesterday because the baby had a fever. Fleeting glimpses into one another’s lives don’t tell the whole picture, and when we continue to compare ourselves with one another we are just setting ourselves up for feeling like “we’re not doing enough”.
So instead of measuring ourselves against one another – let’s instead give a big high-five to ourselves and to all Moms who work so hard everyday!
