Take a moment to think – when is the last time you did something that challenged you? When is the last time you did something you once thought you might never do? And how did that experience make you feel?
It is very easy to live our lives on auto-pilot mode – waking up, going to work/school, preparing dinner, cleaning up the house and settling down to sleep. It is completely normal to become adapted to our routines and struggle to find the time or energy for other things. Staying in that mindset frequently provides us with consistency, which is sometimes refreshing when you lead a busy life. On the other hand, living where we are comfortable too often keeps us stuck in one place, and leaves little room for personal growth. This causes us to miss out on some of the wonderful things this life has to offer.
When I realize I’ve fallen into this rut, I find new ways to challenge myself by setting goals that are within reach. I have found that creating healthier habits and trying new things adds excitement to my life, and also makes me happier. For example, during the month of May I decided I was going to practice yoga – something I have never tried before – for 20 minutes each day, following along with videos I found on You-Tube. I found it so relaxing that I continue to do it every morning.
A challenge pushes you out of your comfort zone, a place with little stress and anxiety because you know what to expect there. By nature, we seek out our comfort zone because that’s where we feel most at home. However, when we step out of the comfort zone and take a risk, we create the conditions necessary for growth and success in our lives. Ask yourself this: have you ever done anything you were proud of yourself for while on auto-pilot mode?
After completing the challenges I set for myself, I feel accomplished. It makes me want to take on bigger challenges that allow me to learn, grow, and experience new things at a higher level. I’m learning more about myself each day throughout this process. I encourage you to set a goal that will challenge you in some way. By starting out with a small, attainable goal, you could inspire new creativity and create a more positive mentality that spices up your day-to-day routine. After some time, you will truly feel as if you are capable of anything you set your mind to!
