In a proactive measure to safeguard children from firearm-related accidents, the Michigan State Police (MSP) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) have joined forces. With $500,000 allocated from the FY24 MSP budget, the MSP coordinated the acquisition of 75,000 cable-style gun locks from Project ChildSafe.
These safety devices will be distributed for free at MDHHS county offices, starting immediately, and at select local health departments, while supplies last. By June, all MDHHS offices statewide will have these locks available.
Following a concerning rise in firearm injuries as the leading cause of child mortality in Michigan and the U.S. in 2020, MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in firearm safety. Residents are encouraged to visit MDHHS offices or inquire with local health departments to obtain these crucial safety measures.
