It is hard to believe twenty years have gone by since SONS, Save Our Neighborhoods and Streets organized a basketball league for a group of “at-risk” youth in our community. Since those first games were held, SONS has grown to include a number of programs, activities, and employment opportunities for over 3,000 teens and children annually. At the SONS annual banquet celebration, Michael Reaves, Director of Public Safety for the City of Port Huron stated, “SONS is a real gem in our community”, and I believe that to be true. The “proof is in the pudding” as the saying goes, and we are seeing a lot of “proof” as these at-risk youth prove themselves, against the odds they face at home. The guidance, direction and love that the SONS volunteers have poured into these young people for twenty years is seeing many former SONS participants return to work with the group and share their success. Congratulations SONS for twenty years of working to make our community stronger.
