Port Huron Schools Forges Path To Stronger Education-Industry Ties, Boosting Local Workforce

In an exciting development for education and the local economy, Port Huron Schools is set to host a webinar on November 14th, at 10 a.m., showcasing their innovative approach to connecting businesses with schools. 

The event, organized in collaboration with the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County (EDA), aims to build a more robust school system while simultaneously growing the local workforce.

The webinar will feature Kit Hard, Supervisor of Secondary STEAM and Career and College Pathways Curricula at Port Huron Area Schools, who will share how schools are preparing students for the workforce and discuss existing local partnerships.

SEMCO Customers Warned Of Door-To-Door Scam: Fake Employees Soliciting Sensitive Information

SEMCO Energy Gas Company has received multiple reports from customers about door-to-door solicitors falsely claiming to be SEMCO employees. These impostors are requesting copies of customers’ gas bills and banking details. SEMCO, however, emphasizes that they do not engage in door-to-door solicitation and never ask for such sensitive information.

Customers are strongly urged to exercise caution and avoid sharing personal data with strangers. SEMCO advises against revealing utility bills, driver’s licenses, or bank account numbers to anyone at the door. 

To verify the legitimacy of any claims, customers are encouraged to research independently, particularly regarding utility rates. SEMCO’s rates are regulated by the Michigan Public Service Commission and can be verified online.

Port Huron Announces Road Resurfacing Project, Impacting Multiple Streets

The City of Port Huron is set to embark on a comprehensive road resurfacing project, beginning this week. 

The affected segments, including Howard Street, Pine Street, Wall Street, and more, will witness new asphalt pavement, select concrete curb and gutter replacements, and ADA accessible sidewalk ramp improvements. 

Funded by voter-approved street millage, the construction will necessitate road closures on each segment with “road closed, local traffic only” signage. The anticipated completion date is May 31st, 2024, with a winter shutdown from November 16th, 2023. 

During the winter hiatus, all roads and sidewalks will be accessible until the project resumes in March/April 2024. Residents are urged to plan accordingly for these essential infrastructure enhancements.

Port Huron Old Newsboys Hosts “Bowl 4 Kids” Fundraiser

Port Huron Old Newsboys is thrilled to announce the upcoming “Bowl 4 Kids” event on Saturday, November 4th, at Port Huron Lanes located at 1718 Hancock Street, Port Huron. From 1 – 5 p.m., participants can enjoy two games of bowling with shoe rental included, all for just $20 per ticket.

This charitable event aims to raise funds for a noble cause, with every $60 contributing to a child’s clothing essentials. The organization encourages community members to join in the fun and support local kids in need. 

The Old Newsboys organization has been raising money to buy boots, socks and underwear for St. Clair County children in need at Christmas time for over 100 years.

Fort Gratiot Residents Rally Against Industrial Solar Farms, Fear Property Value Plunge

The proposal for 800 acres of industrial solar development faces mounting opposition. Fort Gratiot residents are up in arms over plans to construct industrial solar farms on agricultural land and near residential homes, expressing concerns that the projects will significantly diminish local property values. 

Critics argue that insufficient notice was given to affected residents, limiting their ability to voice concerns. A call for a Public Hearing, permitted under the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act, has been made by those living within 300 feet of the proposed sites, emphasizing the importance of community awareness. 

The Fort Gratiot Charter Township Planning Commission has scheduled a crucial meeting on Tuesday, October 10th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gardendale Meeting Room at the Municipal Center, 3720 Keewahdin Rd. 

Residents are urging their neighbors to attend the meeting or offer guidance in this critical juncture for Fort Gratiot.
