Men Face Pretrial Hearings

Two local men, Justin King from Sandusky and Anthony Caulkins from Peck, are set for pretrial hearings next week in separate child sexual abuse material cases. Both were charged after investigations by the Michigan State Police’s Computer Crimes Unit. Caulkins faces 16 charges, including aggravated possession and distribution of child abuse material, while King faces 14 charges. Both men had evidence seized from their homes. The pretrial hearings are scheduled for April 16th in front of Judge Timothy Wrathell.

Council Moves Forward with Marijuana Ordinances

Marlette City Council voted 4-2 Monday night to move forward with two ordinances allowing recreational marijuana businesses in the city. The proposed rules would permit one marijuana grow operation and one retail store. The ordinances will now be reviewed by the city’s planning and zoning committees before being presented to the public for a vote. In other business, the council discussed replacing City Manager Ryan Rudzis, who will leave in May. Former Police Chief Brian McGinnis expressed interest in serving as interim manager, and the council voted to begin talks with him.

Midtown Trail Cleanup

Sarnia’s Midtown Trail will be cleaned up on April 26, as part of ongoing efforts to improve this popular walking and cycling route. Stretching from Lambton College to downtown, the trail has seen major upgrades to make it more accessible and connected. nuSarnia, a local group focused on revitalizing public spaces, is organizing the cleanup. Volunteers will meet at Finch Avenue at 9 a.m. Organizers say the cleanup is vital for keeping the trail welcoming. Gloves, bags, and refreshments will be provided.

Citizens Police Academy

The Port Huron Police Department launched its annual Citizens Police Academy with its largest-ever class—37 eager to learn about law enforcement. Over the coming weeks, participants will explore police work through patrol operations, hands-on equipment sessions, and department tours, including special units like K9 and Major Crimes. They’ll ride along with officers, learn about mental health efforts, and engage with Volunteers in Police Service. The program aims to foster transparency and trust between the police and the public. Graduation is set for May.

Local Standouts in Basketball Honors

Jackson Kohler, the standout guard from Yale, earned a spot on the annual Michigan Sports Writers All-State Division 2 First Team after leading the Bulldogs to a 22-4 record, a BWAC title, and a district championship. Kohler set school records for points, steals, and 3-pointers, averaging 21.5 points per game. He wasn’t alone, as fellow Blue Water Area players Alex Jamison from Port Huron Northern and Braylon Frantz from St. Clair were also recognized for their achievements, with Jamison earning Second Team honors and Frantz landing an Honorable Mention.
