Two Ice Fishermen Rescued

Two ice fishermen were rescued from Saginaw Bay near Sebewaing Township on Monday after falling into waist-deep water. A third fisherman called for help around noon when he noticed the pair struggling to climb back onto the ice. Fire and Police deemed the ice too dangerous for a direct rescue, so the Huron County Sheriff’s airboat was deployed. Within 50 minutes, the men were safely aboard the airboat and transported to shore for medical treatment. Authorities warn all fishermen to stay off the ice.

Major Repaving Project

Mackinac Bridge drivers should prepare for lane closures as a major repaving project resumes this spring. Starting March 24th, southbound lanes will be closed for repairs, with traffic shifted to the northbound side. The project, which includes joint replacements and limited repaving, aims to finish before Memorial Day to minimize disruption. Wide-load vehicles face restrictions and must arrange crossings in advance. The bridge authority urges drivers to plan for delays or choose off-peak times to avoid traffic jams during the ongoing work.

St. Clair County Cuts EDA Funding

In St. Clair County, government has cut ties with the Economic Development Alliance, a group that helps bring jobs and businesses to the area. The county board stopped giving the Alliance its yearly $310,000 because they felt the group wasn’t open enough about its work. This decision, made in a quick meeting, might cost two jobs soon. The Alliance says it needs to keep some talks private to attract companies, but the county wanted everything public. Now, folks wonder how this split will affect new businesses coming to town.
