Port Huron’s First Edible Park

Port Huron is launching its first Edible Park, offering fresh fruit for free to kids and families in the area. Located across from Cleveland Elementary on 28th Street, the park features trees with pears, apples, and peaches for anyone to pick. This new initiative, led by the city manager’s office, aims to transform vacant lots into productive green spaces. A second park is planned near Garfield Elementary next year. City officials hope this simple, low-cost idea will bring healthy snacks to local neighborhoods and potentially expand to more sites in the future.

Senate Passes House Bill 5032

The Michigan Senate has passed House Bill 5032, aimed at expanding homeownership options across the state, with the bill now awaiting Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s signature. The legislation updates the cap on single-family mortgages backed by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, tying it to 90% of the IRS maximum sales price instead of a flat $224,500. This change allows the cap to adjust annually with the housing market, addressing rising home prices. The reform is expected to help more Michigan families secure affordable housing within 90 days of becoming law.
