Thumb Area Transit Receives State Grant

Thumb Area Transit (TAT) is moving forward with plans for a new facility after receiving a significant $10 million grant from the state. This funding, part of the Intermodal Capital Investment Grant program, aims to enhance public transit services. The organization has outgrown its current facility, which can’t support its expanding fleet of 60 buses and growing employee base. With the project costing an estimated $32 million, TAT is looking for additional funding.

Black River Canal Repairs

Repairs to the Black River Canal in Port Huron are set to start in less than two weeks, following City Manager James Freed’s approval of a contract with Trojan Development Company. The company will install a cofferdam and remove the damaged tainter gate. After evaluating six bids, they selected the most cost-effective option with the quickest completion time. This project is the first of three phases, which will include installing a new tainter gate, building seawalls, and reinforcing the canal banks.

Sanilac County Local Measures

Sanilac County voters will decide on local measures in the upcoming election. Lexington Township seeks millages for road work and public safety. Fremont and Speaker Townships address wind-farming regulations, with Speaker also proposing a millage for road repair. Moore Township wants to renew a millage for road work. Wheatland Township seeks a millage for fire protection. Port Sanilac and Lexington villages propose millage renewals for community center funding and general funding increases, respectively.

Police Explorer Program

The Port Huron Police Department is inviting young adults aged 14 to 20 to apply for its Police Explorer Program. This initiative offers an excellent chance to learn about law enforcement while working alongside officers in the community. Participants will gain valuable skills through regular meetings focused on training and discussions, but it’s important to note that they are non-sworn volunteers and will not have any law enforcement authority. Explorers may assist at public events like parades, but they will always be supervised.

Fall Leaf Pick-up in Port Huron

The annual Fall leaf pick-up program will take place from October 21st to November 30th. Residents must place their leaves on the boulevard in front of their homes by Monday at 7 a.m. for collection any day of the week. Equipment will operate in zones one and two simultaneously. Yard waste bags and containers will also be picked up until December 12th. To ensure proper collection, leaves should not be mixed with other debris, and residents should avoid parking near leaf piles. View a map of the collection zones below.

Lapeer City Commission Considers New Rules for Public Participation

At the upcoming Lapeer City Commission meeting on October 21st, new rules for public participation will be discussed after recent concerns about disruptive behavior at meetings. Proposed changes include limiting speaking time to three minutes for individuals and ten minutes for group representatives, while also clarifying that comments should focus on city-related matters. Disruptive attendees may be removed by police if necessary.
