After 74 years, Cecil Harvey of Port Huron finally achieved his dream of earning a high school diploma at age 92. In a heartfelt ceremony at Port Huron’s Council on Aging, surrounded by friends and family, Harvey was awarded his diploma by the local school district’s assistant superintendent. His story began when he left high school to support his family after his father’s passing, eventually working for Chevrolet. Mayor Pauline Repp presented a certificate, marking one of her final acts in office. Harvey will walk with Port Huron’s graduating seniors this July.

Lapeer County law enforcement recovered nearly $25,000 after an elderly Elba Township man was scammed in a Bitcoin scheme in October. The victim received an email claiming he won Bitcoin and was persuaded to withdraw $24,500 in cash for the scammer. His daughter noticed something was wrong and noted the scammer’s license plate, while the bank manager alerted authorities. Detective Sergeant Troy Covert traced the vehicle to Detroit, and a search with Detroit Police led to recovering the money.

McLaren Port Huron and its Foundation are welcoming the holiday season with the 36th Annual Festival of Trees. This year, they debut the Festival of Trees Gala, a black-tie event on Dec. 6 at the Blue Water Convention Center. Starting Nov. 29th, businesses will display 22 lit trees downtown, with more in the hospital lobby. Proceeds will fund a 3D CT imaging unit for the hospital. Events include a Tree Hop on Dec. 7th and raffle drawings on Dec. 10th and 20th.

The holiday season kicks off in Port Huron with the Sperry’s Santa Claus Parade on Friday, Nov. 29th at 6 PM. Santa will lead the event and officially light the Christmas Tree in Downtown. The celebration continues with cocoa, cookies, and Claus at Sperry’s Moviehouse, where tickets are just $5. Ice skating at McMorran Plaza adds to the fun, and the first 500 attendees can enjoy free s’mores starting at 5:15 PM. It’s an evening full of holiday cheer for the whole family!

A developer is proposing a major mixed-use project on the former Holmes Foundry site in Point Edward, just south of Highway 402 and near Sarnia’s Norm Perry Park. The plan includes residential units, a hotel, parks, and commercial spaces, potentially doubling the village’s population. A virtual meeting on Nov. 19th will allow residents to learn about the proposal, ask questions, and hear about plans for infrastructure upgrades. The project could move forward after an environmental assessment is completed.

McKenzie Health System in Sandusky is now offering Modified Barium Swallow Studies or MBSS, a diagnostic test that evaluates swallowing function, right at their local facility. This service is a win for patients who previously had to travel far for this test. MBSS uses x-rays and a safe contrast material to check for swallowing issues, common after strokes, head injuries, or certain diseases. The new addition is part of McKenzie’s ongoing effort to expand care options. Patients can now schedule this test through their primary care provider.
