Port Huron’s favorite holiday figure, Officer Tinsel, has returned to the police department after a busy season at the North Pole dealing with a candy cane crisis. Early Tuesday morning, staff discovered the cheerful elf in a stocking near the records area, ready to spread festive spirit. Tinsel has already caught wind of a new elf, Nitro, at Tri-Hospital EMS and plans to make a visit soon to remind everyone who the town’s original Elf is. With the holidays underway, Officer Tinsel is set to bring joy and some friendly competition to Port Huron.

Tanner Carr, 38, of Sebewaing, was convicted last week of assault and reckless operation of an airboat after a February incident on a Huron County canal. Carr confronted a former friend while ice fishing, drove his airboat toward him, and caused the victim’s father to fall into icy water. The father was rescued but suffered injuries. Carr denied the incident, but after trial, a jury found him guilty. He faces up to 10 years in prison, with sentencing set for February.

An Imlay City man was arrested Saturday morning after firing a shotgun multiple times in his backyard during a mental health crisis. Around 10:30 neighbors called 911 after some rounds struck nearby properties. Police arrived quickly, with one officer trying to talk down the man, who appeared intoxicated and fired more rounds before his gun jammed. The man was eventually arrested after damaging police vehicles. He faces charges, including reckless discharge of a firearm and destruction of property.

Port Huron Police are seeking help in locating 34-year-old Reuben David Guy, who has been missing since November 19th. Guy, described as 5’6″, 185 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes, was last seen leaving his home on Lapeer Avenue for work. His current whereabouts are unknown. The Michigan State Housing Development Authority has approved a $19 million loan to renovate North Port Apartments in Port Huron. The 249-unit complex will get updates to aging structures, including new roofs, flooring, HVAC, plumbing, and ADA improvements. The project will reserve units for low-income residents, with some set aside for those earning between 40% and 80% of the area’s median income. Port Huron officials are backing the renovation to address the city’s housing shortage, with the project also creating 24 temporary jobs in the area.
