Lambton College Awards 684 Students

This year, 684 Lambton College students earned over $822,000 in scholarships and bursaries, marking a record year for the college’s Foundation. These awards support students facing financial and personal challenges, boosting their confidence and success. Foundation Manager Krystyna Kahnert says donations show belief in students, helping them stay motivated and complete their studies. Scholarship recipients at Lambton have a 98% retention rate, highlighting the program’s positive impact. To fund future awards, the Foundation is running a 50/50 lottery, with tickets available online.

Waters Still Too Cold for Swimming

Lake Huron remains chilly as summer begins, with water temperatures around 50 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit in late May. Near Port Huron, the water was about 50°F, while near Bay City it warmed to nearly 64°F. Experts say swimming is safest when lake water reaches around 70°F, which usually happens in late summer. Residents planning trips to Lake Huron should wait for warmer water to avoid risks like cold shock and hypothermia.

Man Rescued from Smoke-Filled Home Fire

A man was rescued from a house fire in Lexington Township last week. Sanilac County dispatchers got a call just after 1 p.m. about smoke on Roach Road, and the caller later said his home was full of smoke and he couldn’t get out because of medical issues. Police and firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames. After several rescue attempts, they used a chainsaw to free the man through a bedroom window. He was taken by ambulance to McLaren Port Huron for treatment. The fire’s cause is still unknown.
