Each year on September 30th, Canada observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honors the Indigenous children and families who never returned home, as well as those who survived residential schools in Canada.

The history of residential schools is a dark and unfortunate part of Canadian history. The residential school system which operated from the 1800’s into the 20th century, would forcibly separate children from their families and teach them to not acknowledge their culture or speak their native languages. 

The goal is to rebuild trust and support the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, as well as providing them with equitable employment and economic development opportunities. Businesses are also asked to provide skills-based staff training in anti-racism and intercultural competency.

There were a variety of events, conversations, and actions, to not only acknowledge and commemorate those affected, but to inspire change towards a better future for the Indigenous population as a whole.

Have you ever wanted to experience nature without leaving the city limits? Well now you can do just that with the re-opening of the Belle Isle Nature Center. 

After being closed for a number of years, the Belle Isle Nature Center is back better than ever after a $2.5 million dollar renovation. Featuring new updates such as climbing tunnels and live animals, there are plenty of activities to enjoy for the whole family. Admission is free, so be sure to put it on your calendar to visit this fall. 

They also host a variety of programs for children and families such as Nature Tots and family hikes. All programs are free, but you must pre-register to participate. Business hours are from 10 AM – 5 PM daily.

Winter is on the way, which brings its own set of challenges and issues when it comes to maintaining and repairing a home. The Community Development Division in the City of Port Huron is helping its elderly residents get their homes winter ready with their Elderly Repair Program.

The program is available for seniors 62 years old and up, and they must be a resident of the City of Port Huron. Services include furnace and hot water repair/replacement, roof and hot water tank replacement, porch repair, and more. The program will provide assistance of up to $10,000.

The St. Clair County Health Department and Teen Health locations will be closed on Wednesday, October 5 for an all staff in-service/training day. Regular business hours will resume on October 6, 2022.

On Monday, October 31, the St. Clair County Health Department and Teen Health locations will be open from 8:00am – 4:30pm. Regular Monday hours, 10:00am – 6:30pm will resume on November 7.

The City of Port Huron has been approved for its new social district which will be located along the St. Clair River. Soon you’ll be able to sit and have a drink with friends while taking in the scenery and watching the freighters go by. 

A social district is a designated area where people can take their alcoholic beverages to be consumed outside of the bar or restaurant from which it was originally purchased. The new Edison Social District will run along the Thomas Edison Parkway. 

There will be two licensed establishments included in the Edison Social District, Freighters Eatery & Taproom as well as the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. Security and enforcement will be provided by the Port Huron Police Department for everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time. Plastic cups with a special social district logo are required while in the area if consuming alcohol. 

This new social district will be the second for the City of Port Huron, with its first being located in the Downtown area.
