Saturday is National Hunting and Fishing Day

Established in 1972, National Hunting and Fishing Day celebrates and recognizes hunters and anglers for their immense contributions to fish and wildlife conservation and to society.

That year, Congress resolved, “That the President of the United States declare the fourth Saturday of September 1972 as ‘National Hunting and Fishing Day’ to provide that deserved national recognition, to recognize the esthetic, health and recreational virtues of hunting and fishing, to dramatize the continued need for gun and boat safety and to rededicate ourselves to the conservation and respectful use of our wildlife and natural resources.”

Michigan provides a unique opportunity for the 650,000 hunters and 1.2 million anglers who annually enjoy an abundance of land and more than 11,000 inland lakes, tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams, and 3,300 miles of Great Lakes shoreline.

Hunting and fishing benefit Michigan’s economy by annually generating $11.2 billion, and this spending supports more than 171,000 jobs in Michigan.

This Saturday, head out for a day of fun in the field or on the water. Just make sure you have a 2022 hunting or fishing license with you when you go. Licenses can be purchased at Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses or via the DNR Hunt Fish app, putting licenses, permits, regulations and more right in the palm of your hand.

Whether you’re a seasoned hunter, avid angler or beginner, review safety tips at Michigan.gov/DNR under the Education and Safety tab in addition to reviewing rules and regulations at Michigan.gov/DNRDigests.

September Is National Hispanic Heritage Month

The United States of America is made up of many cultures, nationalities, and races living together. This makes it a diverse and unique country where we celebrate and honor the many cultures who have made a contribution to this great nation.

The month of September begins the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a time where we celebrate, honor, and reflect on the Hispanic community and their role in enriching our culture and society. Beginning September 15th and ending October 15th, National Hispanic Heritage Month began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968. It was later extended to a month-long observation in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan.

The Hispanic community includes those with ancestry that can be traced to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, as well as Central and South America. The date of September 15 is significant in the fact that it is a day that many Latin countries acknowledge or celebrate their independence days.

Be sure to look for events in your local community that acknowledges and celebrates our Hispanic brothers and sisters and their contribution to our great country, the United States of America.

“Our Strong Start” Program to Help Open New Child Care Programs and Increase Availability of Affordable Care

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced the new Our Strong Start program to make it easier for entrepreneurs to open new child care programs, get licensed faster, and expand access to high-quality, affordable child care for working families.

Our Strong Start will be run by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs’ Child Care Licensing Bureau and help entrepreneurs get licensed and secure grant funding to launch their business.

Our Strong Start navigators will counsel potential business owners, help them understand and quickly navigate the licensing process, assist them in creating a business plan, and connect them with grant funds to open their child care business. Navigators are also available to assist current business owners interested in expanding their child care program.  Entrepreneurs can connect with the Our Strong Start at michigan.gov/MIchildcare.

In addition to working one-on-one with entrepreneurs, the Our Strong Start team will host in-person and virtual events to promote the child care industry and encourage individuals to consider a career in child care. The first virtual event, “How to Open a Successful Child Care Business in Michigan,” will be at 12 PM on September 15th. Anyone considering a career in child care can register at michigan.gov/MIchildcare.

Families can visit michigan.gov/childcare for a complete list of reasons they may qualify for low or no cost child care and qualifying income levels for larger families.
