Free Teen Safety Workshop

Parents and caregivers in Sandusky have a new opportunity to learn how to spot risky teen behaviors at a free event next Wednesday. The “Hidden in Plain Sight” session takes place at noon in the McKenzie Health System Dining Room, with a virtual Zoom option available. A prevention specialist with the Sanilac County Health Department will guide participants through the HIPS Kit, showing how everyday items in a teen’s room can signal substance use or other concerning behaviors. Registration is open online or by phone.

YMCA Bike Challenge Return

The YMCA of the Blue Water Area will host its annual stationary bike challenge Sept. 27th at McMorran Plaza from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Teams of four will race to log the most miles while facing fun roadblocks and surprises. The family-friendly event includes live music, local food and a spirit contest. Proceeds support the YMCA’s Open Arms Campaign, which funds youth programs, swim lessons and free meals in the community. Rain or shine, the event moves indoors to the YMCA Gym if needed.

Connect Sarnia Keeps Downtown Drop-In Open

A new non-profit, Connect Sarnia, has secured the downtown drop-in centre at 181 Christina St. N., formerly run by Nightlight Canada, ensuring the space remains open for those facing social isolation. The volunteer-led group purchased the building in July, providing stability for 30 to 40 weekly guests. Connect Sarnia focuses on building lasting relationships through games, music, and art. Organizers say community support is key, from volunteers to donations of snacks, clothing, and funds.

Man Arrested in July Carjacking

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Huron County in connection with a July carjacking in Elkton. The victim, Austin Bieri of Bad Axe, told police the suspect held him at knifepoint in his Chevy Tahoe and forced him to withdraw cash from a local ATM before Bieri escaped at a stoplight. The stolen Tahoe was later found burned in a cornfield near the Elkton plant. Last Friday, Aron M. Laycock was arrested and faces charges of carjacking and tampering with evidence.

Farmers Hall of Fame to Honor Local Grower

Five Michigan farm families will be honored in the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame on September 20th at the Barry Expo Center in Barry County. Among them is St. Clair County’s Tom Durand, known for advancing corn production and supporting local farmers through leadership roles in state corn organizations. Durand grows corn, soybeans, wheat, black beans, and sugar beets locally. Established in 1982, the Hall of Fame celebrates farmers who excel in agriculture and serve their communities.

Free Oral Cancer Screenings

The Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Port Huron is hosting free oral cancer screenings on Sept. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m.. Oral cancer, Michigan’s fastest-growing cancer with over 54,000 annual cases, can affect anyone and often shows no early symptoms. The painless, five-minute screenings can detect pre-cancerous tissue, and anyone with abnormal results will be referred to a nurse navigator for follow-up care. Risk factors include tobacco, alcohol, sun exposure, and certain demographics, making early detection crucial. Appointments are required and space is limited.
