Mid City Nutrition Ramps Up Services

Mid City Nutrition’s new Griswold Street location in Port Huron is serving the community in full force since opening in September. The soup kitchen now provides lunch for about 100 people and dinner for 80 daily, all dine-in with no ID or paperwork required. Executive Director Sarah Jones says the move from St. Martin Lutheran Church went smoothly, and the new space lets staff help guests beyond meals, like providing coats. With SNAP benefits paused in November, the kitchen is preparing for more visitors.

Civil Case Resumes Against Former Treasurer

The civil lawsuit against former Yale Chamber treasurer Kellie Lauwers is moving forward after a six-month pause. A St. Clair County judge delayed the case while state police finished a criminal probe. That review has now been sent to the Attorney General. The chamber claims Lauwers secretly wrote checks to herself, forged signatures, and edited profit and loss sheets to hide more than $32,000 over two years. She allegedly admitted wrongdoing but offered no repayment. A status hearing is set for November 19th in Port Huron.

Freshman Bolsters SC4 Volleyball’s Conference Lead

St. Clair County Community College freshman Addison Bolen from Maple Rapids is making waves on the volleyball court. Bolen was named MCCAA Eastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Skippers to a perfect 5-0 run. Her strong setting, smart plays, and leadership are helping SC4 stay on top of the Eastern Conference. The team now looks poised for its first outright conference title in more than ten years.

Blue Water Habitat Honors Retiring Director

Blue Water Habitat for Humanity celebrated 35 years of helping families in the Blue Water Area last Tuesday at Alexander’s Premier Banquet Facility in Port Huron. The event honored retiring Executive Director Ernest Werth-Toward, who led the nonprofit since ’08, overseeing programs like ReStore and Rock the Block, which brings hundreds of volunteers together to improve neighborhoods. Habitat helps local families build affordable homes through volunteer “sweat equity” and homeowner education. Interim Director Kara Geib praised Werth-Toward’s collaborative leadership and lasting impact on staff, volunteers, and the community.

Deckerville Woman Hospitalized

A two-vehicle crash last Wednesday morning in Evergreen Township sent a Deckerville woman to the hospital. Around 7, a GMC Terrain driven by the 76-year-old failed to stop at the intersection of North Van Dyke and Deckerville Road and was struck by a northbound Ford Transit van from Marlette. The collision left the van on its side in a ditch and the SUV on the roadside. Firefighters had to free the woman from her SUV before Sanilac EMS transported her to McLaren Lapeer. The van driver was checked at the scene and released.

Police Warn Marysville Seniors

Marysville police say fraud scams are spiking in town and seniors are being targeted. Officers stopped a crew last Tuesday that tried to trick a local couple with a fake concrete job near the RESA campus on Range Road. One person was arrested and released as charges are prepared. Police say the group has a multi-state crime history. Residents are urged to only hire reputable companies and to report suspicious activity or fraud to Marysville Police at 810-364-6300.
