New Prevention Coalition Forming In St. Clair County – Your Voice Is Needed!

St. Clair County youth risk behavior data shows the need to establish a new community prevention coalition.  According to Lisa Ruddy, BS, CHES, Health Educator at the St. Clair County Health Department, all voices are needed at the table in order to work together to reduce risk factors for youth substance use. Substance use is at the root of many societal concerns, such as not graduating, behavioral issues, truancy, violence, or family problems. Preventing risky behaviors will impact the health, well-being and ultimately the lives of teens and the community around them. Together, she says we will prioritize substance use issues to tackle and develop a five-year comprehensive, community-owned plan to guide coalition efforts.  They are looking for representation at all three planning sessions to help map out strategies that will improve the health of local youth. Mark your calendar and share with everyone you know. Lunch will be provided.

Gun Buy Back Program A Great Success

The Port Huron Police Department’s “Gun Buy Back” sponsored by the James C. Acheson Foundation on Saturday, April 6th, was a great success, according to Captain Marcy Kuehn.  The Port Huron Police Department took in 15 sawed off shotguns, 18 rifles and 29 handguns – one of which had the serial number scratched off.  Also collected were several non-functioning firearms and several thousand rounds of ammunition and black powder to be destroyed.  At noon the police department had run out of the $5,000 cash provided for the event, but the James C. Acheson Foundation advised they would support additional funding.  Officers made personal withdrawal at their ATM’s to continue to pay for the guns. A majority of the citizens advised they had inherited guns or held onto guns they didn’t feel safe owning and wanted them destroyed so they didn’t get in the wrong hands. In total, $9,310.00 was given out to area residents .All firearms collected from this event will be disposed of and not re-sold or retained.

DTF Seizes Crack Cocaine, Crystal Meth In Separate Busts

The St. Clair County Drug Task Force executed a pair of traffic stops last week, leading to the confiscation of multiple drugs and a stolen firearm.  According to Sheriff Tim Donnellon, the DTF, with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol, stopped a truck on eastbound I-94 at Wadhams Road in St. Clair Township Tuesday night at about 8:30.  The Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit responded, with the K-9 alerting that drugs were in the vehicle.  A subsequent search of the truck led to the seizure of crack cocaine and a handgun that had been reported stolen out of Georgia.  A 52 year old man and 53 year old woman, both from Port Huron were arrested and lodged at the St. Clair County Intervention and Detention Center.  They are expected to face charges including possession of crack cocaine, receiving and concealing stolen property and felony firearms.  The Port Huron Police K-9 Unit also assisted in the investigation.  On Thursday night shortly after 10:00, a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle on Klettner Road near Wadhams Road in St. Clair Township.  An investigation by the Drug Task Force following the stop located a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in the trunk of the vehicle, along with crystal methamphetamine. A 34 year old Port Huron man was arrested and lodged at the IDC.  The DTF clandestine meth lab removal team was called to dismantle and dispose of the lab.  The traffic stop led to the execution of a search warrant at the man’s home on Cooper Avenue in the city of Port Huron.  During the search, analog pills and two guns were located and seized.  The suspect is expected to face charges including operating and maintaining a meth lab, possession of crystal methamphetamine and possession of analog pills.  The Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol and K-9 Unit also assisted in the investigation.

SC4 Accepting Applications For College’s Housing Complex For 2019-20

St. Clair County Community College is now accepting applications from students who are interested in living in the college’s new residence hall during the 2019-20 academic year.  The college’s housing complex, known as The Dock, officially opened Aug. 3, 2018, in downtown Port Huron, making SC4 the first community college in Southeast Michigan to offer student housing. The residence hall provides fully furnished accommodations for up to 80 students, featuring private bathrooms, high-speed wireless internet, parking, laundry facilities and much more.
“This is a great way for students to have a full college experience while not breaking the bank,” said SC4’s College Housing Manager Nathanial Shrapnell.  In addition to enjoying convenient access to the area’s growing arts, entertainment and dining scene, students who are U.S. residents and live in The Dock pay in-district tuition rates at SC4. During the 2018-19 academic year, students from the local community and around the world chose to live on campus.
“I love living here,” said Caio Rodrigues, an international student from Brazil who explained that SC4’s new student housing was a major factor in his decision to attend the college. “It’s given me the chance to connect with different people, and it’s great being right downtown and just steps away from the movie theater.”  To be eligible to live at The Dock, students must meet ongoing academic and enrollment requirements. Those interested can find detailed information about College Housing and submit an application for the 2019-20 academic year at sc4.edu/housing.
