Float Down Warnings

Port Huron’s annual Float Down is set for Sunday, drawing thousands to drift six miles from Port Huron to Marysville. The U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards are again warning against the unsanctioned event, citing fast currents, cold water, lack of life jackets, and alcohol use as major dangers. Past floats have led to hypothermia cases and emergency rescues, with water temperatures often in the low 60s. While many enjoy decorating rafts and relaxing on the river, authorities stress the risks are real and safety should come first.

Chatham-Kent Residents Unite

Residents of Chatham-Kent came together in Dresden on Sunday to form a human chain protesting the York1 landfill project. The peaceful event stretched about two kilometers from the inactive dump site on Irish School Road to Dresden Area Central School. Organizer Angie Richards-Mills, a local school board trustee, united the community to protect farmland, water, and children’s futures. The protest opposed Bill 5, which fast-tracked the landfill without an environmental review. The chain began at 1 p.m., with parking available nearby on Richards-Mills’ family farm.
