Dog Rescue Tragedy

A tragic incident occurred in Goodland Township last Wednesday, when a 30-year-old woman drowned while attempting to save her dog from an icy pond. Authorities responded to the home on Armstrong Road around 5:30 p.m. and found the pond frozen with a small area of open water. The woman’s dog was spotted floating in the water, already presumed dead. Firefighters retrieved the woman’s body after she reportedly ventured onto the thin ice to rescue her pet. She was taken to McLaren Lapeer Hospital but was pronounced dead.

This New Year’s Eve, the Blue Water Area Transportation Commission is providing free, door-to-door rides to keep the community safe. Starting at 6:30 p.m. on December 31st, and running until 2:30 a.m. January 1st, the service will cover Port Huron, Marysville, Fort Gratiot, Port Huron Township, and Burtchville. MiCAN Climate Champs

The Michigan Climate Action Network will honor six leaders for their climate and civic engagement efforts today. The virtual event celebrates those making a difference, including Odalis Perales and Em Perry from Michigan United for challenging corporate influence in politics, and Megan Owens for expanding public transit. Andrea Pierce, founder of the Anishinaabek Caucus, and Janet Zahn of the Grand Rapids Climate Coalition are also recognized for their advocacy. Jack MacQuaig, coordinator of MSU’s Sunrise Movement, will receive the youth award for his climate justice work.

Elf Rivalry in Port Huron

Port Huron’s holiday spirit was alive as Officer Tinsel, the town’s beloved elf, made his rounds to meet Nitro, a new elf from Tri-Hospital EMS. Despite Nitro’s confidence, Tinsel reminded everyone who’s been spreading holiday cheer for years. But the fun didn’t stop there! The Port Huron Fire Department sent in their own elf, Firefighter Peppermint, who had to wait for Tinsel’s approval before joining the festivities. The friendly rivalry continues, but Tinsel is not ready to pass on his elf title just yet!

Queen Street Park Upgrade

Sarnia Council has approved $150,000 for a new playground at Queen Street Park, just a short walk from Rainbow Park. The funds, drawn from the Parklands Dedication Reserve, will improve the park at Queen and Devine Streets, offering a safer, more accessible play area. Councillor Chrissy McRoberts, who proposed the motion, said Rainbow Park’s playground has been neglected and is difficult to access due to Christina Street. The project includes a variety of playground equipment and upgrades to the park space.

Port Huron Trash Update

Port Huron Township residents are now receiving new 96-gallon green trash and recycling bins, as Waste Management prepares to automate collection starting January 1st. These bins, known as “toters,” must be used for all trash, with additional bins available for $8 a month. Port Huron Township is among the first local areas to adopt this more efficient system.
