SC4 Awarded $1.25M

St. Clair County Community College will receive $1.25 million from the state to expand career pathways and boost college access for local adults and students. Funded through the MiLEAP Reconnect Grant, the three-year initiative will support job-focused education, student support services, and stronger partnerships with area schools and employers. SC4 has hired Nick Beaudry to lead the project, with three college navigators starting in July to help guide residents toward training and degrees that match local job market needs.

Ashford Pushes for Charter Rewrite

Port Huron Mayor Anita Ashford is urging a full rewrite of the city’s charter, calling it outdated and unbalanced. She argues it gives the unelected city manager too much power, leaving elected council members with limited authority. Ashford says a revised charter could improve how city leaders work together and solve internal conflicts. Under Michigan law, the process can begin with a petition from five percent of local voters or a two-thirds city council vote. If approved, a charter commission is formed, and final changes must go to the governor, then back to voters.
