The Port Huron Fire Department is currently underway with its Fire Prevention Week activities, running through Saturday. Partnering with State Farm and the National Fire Protection Association, the department is emphasizing the theme “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you.” This initiative focuses on educating the community about the vital role of functioning smoke alarms, which can cut the risk of fire-related deaths by more than half.

Ursuline College New College Funding

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board is pressing ahead with its plans for a new Ursuline College in Chatham, seeking nearly $81 million in provincial funding. Board officials anticipate a decision by spring, despite four previous unsuccessful funding requests. A new facility would be modern, energy-efficient, and fully accessible, with a proposed size of 141,988 square feet to accommodate 1,327 students. The existing school at 85 Grand Ave. W. dates back to 1957. The new location will remain within Chatham city limits.

The Historical Society of Marine City is gearing up for a lively Halloween bash at WaterStreet Winery & Brewing Company on October 23rd from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Priced at $40, tickets grant access to a variety of spooky activities like Frightful Flight, Creepy Karaoke, and a Costume Contest. Huron County Man Found Guilty In Domestic Violence Case

In Huron County, Jeffery Sample was found guilty of two counts of domestic violence and one count of malicious destruction of property following a violent incident in February. The altercation occurred when Sample, under the influence, attacked a woman, throwing her onto a bed. She fled to the bathroom, but Sample followed, damaging the door and knocking over a child’s potty chair onto her. After admitting to his actions during a police interview, Sample was arraigned on March 4th.

Ontario Investing in Free Business Training

The Ontario government is allocating $5 million to the Racialized and Indigenous Supports for Entrepreneurs (RAISE) program, aimed at helping over 400 entrepreneurs from Indigenous, Black, and other racialized communities. This funding is part of a broader $15 million initiative over three years to assist more than 1,200 small business owners with free coaching, training, and grants. Acting Minister Graham McGregor emphasized the need to remove systemic barriers that hinder these entrepreneurs, ensuring they have access to the resources and capital necessary to turn their passions into thriving businesses.
