Mainstreet Memories Board Gifts $26,500 Check To Council On Aging, Total Donations Exceed $140,000 In 7 Years

In a special meeting convened by the Mainstreet Memories Board of Directors, the Council on Aging was bestowed with a generous check totaling $26,500. When combined with the in-kind contributions from the Board, the cumulative donation over the past seven years has surged to just over $140,000.

The Wheels on the Waterfront Car Show surpassed expectations with 545 registered vehicles and a strong turnout. Moran Automotive and ZF Marysville served as presenting sponsors, while Diamond Sponsors included Ford Performance, WGRT 102.3 FM, Cedar Hill Graphics, and Magna International.

Main Street Memories Vice President Tim Floyd noted, “This year’s event drew the largest turnout to date, and plans are underway to expand for 2024.”

American Foods Group, LLC Recalls Ground Beef Products Due To E. Coli Contamination

In a precautionary measure, American Foods Group, LLC, operating as Green Bay Dressed Beef, LLC, based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, has initiated a recall of approximately 58,281 pounds of ground beef products due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O103. 

STEC O103 infections can cause symptoms such as severe diarrhea, often bloody, and vomiting. Although most individuals recover within a week, some cases may lead to more severe illness, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure, particularly in children under 5, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

The affected products, bearing establishment number “EST. 18076” inside the USDA mark of inspection, were distributed to distributors in Georgia, Michigan, and Ohio. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for these products and return or dispose of them as necessary to ensure their safety.

Gov. Whitmer Declares September 17th, “Barry Sanders Day” As New Statue Honors Detroit Lions Legend

In a heartfelt tribute to one of Detroit’s football icons, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has officially proclaimed September 17th, as “Barry Sanders Day” in Michigan. 

This significant declaration coincides with the grand unveiling of an imposing 8-foot bronze statue honoring the legendary Detroit Lions running back, Barry Sanders, just outside Ford Field, ahead of the 2023 NFL season.

Barry Sanders, who held numerous franchise rushing records, etched his name in NFL history with 15,269 rushing yards and an unprecedented ten consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons with the Detroit Lions.

Governor Whitmer expressed her admiration, saying, “Today, we honor Lions legend Barry Sanders with a new statue outside Ford Field. He played with Detroit hustle and humility, always getting the job done and supporting his team. As we enter another Lions season, let’s remember Barry Sanders, one of the greatest to ever do it, and keep on winning.”

Counterfeit Car Seat Sales Raise Safety Concerns During Michigan’s Child Passenger Safety Week

In a disconcerting development, the sale of counterfeit car seats in Michigan has surged, leaving parents and caregivers anxious about their children’s safety on the state’s roads. As Michigan observes Child Passenger Safety Week from September 17th – 23rd, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) have joined forces to combat this growing issue.

Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director, warned, “Parents and gift givers are purchasing seats from online deal sites, sometimes with high-end price tags. Even parents that do extensive research can be easily fooled by these unsafe lookalikes or tricked into purchasing car seats that do not meet U.S. regulations or safety standards.”

Michigan Department Of Labor and Economic Opportunity Offers Aid To UAW Strike-Affected Workers and Businesses

In response to the potential repercussions of the ongoing United Auto Workers (UAW) strike, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has announced a comprehensive initiative to provide essential assistance to affected workers and businesses.

LEO Director Susan Corbin expressed her concern for the state’s workforce, acknowledging that Michigan’s prosperity is closely tied to its automotive industry. “Michigan workers and businesses are the backbone of our economy,” she stated. “We understand the impacts that this auto strike can have on families and communities across the state.”

As negotiations continue, LEO aims to support strike-affected individuals and entities. Workers facing temporary unemployment due to the strike can apply for financial assistance through the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA), which has undergone significant modernization reforms over the past year to facilitate support for auto industry-related work stoppages.
