New Law Mandates Mental Health Insurance Coverage In Michigan

State Rep. Mike Harris announced the passage of Senate Bill 27, a new law requiring insurers to cover mental health and substance use disorder treatment. Signed by the governor on Tuesday, this legislation ensures comprehensive insurance coverage for Michigan residents, incorporating federal protections into state law.

“Mental and physical health are both crucial for a happy, healthy life,” said Harris, vice chair of the House Insurance and Financial Services Committee. “This law guarantees that health insurance coverage includes mental health care, enabling Michiganders to access essential services and treatments.”

The new law represents a significant step towards holistic healthcare, recognizing the importance of mental wellness. Passed with strong bipartisan support, it aims to provide equal footing for mental and physical health, fostering healthier communities across the state.

Cyberattacks On Water Systems Escalate, EPA Increases Enforcement Procedures

Cyberattacks targeting community water systems (CWSs) are escalating in frequency and severity, posing significant risks to public safety according to federal agencies.

Incidents reveal that attackers can manipulate operational technology, leading to severe disruptions in water treatment, distribution, and storage. Potential consequences include damaging infrastructure and altering chemical levels to hazardous amounts. Federal agencies, including the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI, have issued numerous advisories about such threats, often attributed to nation-state organizations.

An alarming 70% of systems inspected by the EPA since September 2023 failed to meet basic Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) requirements, with common issues like unchanged default passwords and insufficient resilience assessments. Immediate action is critical to mitigate these vulnerabilities and protect public health.

Memorial Day: Honoring Fallen Heroes On A National Day Of Remembrance

A national holiday is on the horizon to honor our military service men and women who have given their lives for our country. Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, stands as America’s foremost day to honor its fallen service members.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it was established in 1868 by John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to commemorate Civil War soldiers. After World War I, the day was expanded to honor all American war casualties.

In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday, ensuring its observance in late May. This solemn occasion unites Americans in remembrance, with ceremonies, prayers for peace, and tributes held nationwide. Memorial Day embodies the nation’s collective gratitude for those who sacrificed their lives for freedom.Reporting for WGRT – Choze Powell
