At last week’s meeting, the Sandusky City Council made decisions affecting the city’s future. After holding two closed sessions, the council approved purchasing a property located at 69 Lexington Street for $60,000, with the city covering all closing costs. This purchase is part of ongoing efforts to expand or improve city assets. Additionally, the council extended City Manager Dave Faber’s contract for another year and approved a 2.5% salary increase. These moves demonstrate the council’s commitment to both strategic growth and retaining experienced leadership in Sandusky.

On Friday, Lambton County hosted the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to support Special Olympics Ontario. The event started at 10:30 a.m. at Waterfront Park in Point Edward and traveled through the community, ending in Sarnia. Local police, athletes, and residents came together to raise awareness and funds for athletes with intellectual disabilities. The day concluded with a community BBQ. Many residents participated or cheered along the route. Donations were accepted in person and online.

Cliff Schrader, a former Port Huron City Council member and longtime political commentator, died June 2 from complications of diabetes. He was 74. Schrader was known for his outspoken views on WGRT and in local newspaper columns. He joined the City Council in 1995, challenging entrenched leadership and later surviving a recall campaign. Born Feb. 4, 1951, Schrader stepped into a caretaker role for his six younger siblings after his father’s early death. He served in the Air Force Reserve, earned a degree from Central Michigan University, and built a career in real estate and business, including ownership of the Colonial Laundromat. He also served on the Port Huron Area School Board, worked with United Way and DARES, and remained active in civic life long after his time in office. “Cliff was a remarkable individual who made significant contributions to our community as a council member and columnist,” said City Manager James Freed. Schrader is survived by four children, five siblings, and a grandson. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 7 at 3 p.m. at Jowett Funeral Home.

On June 14, Petrolia’s Victoria Park comes alive with Lambton County Library’s free “Wild Wonder” Summer Reading Challenge launch party. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., families can dive into a wildlife-themed adventure with hands-on fun. Kids meet reptiles, marvel at birds of prey, get their faces painted, and craft cool projects. They can also sign up for the summer reading program to score prizes like LEGO sets, outdoor gear, or free books. If rain hits, the event shifts to Greenwood Arena.
