The Joshua Conant Ordinance

Port Huron City Council passed “The Joshua Conant Ordinance” on Monday, requiring security staff to be trained on positional asphyxiation. The move follows the tragic death of Joshua Conant, who died after an altercation with bouncers outside Roche Bar in November of ’23. Conant’s mother fought tirelessly for the rule change. The ordinance was celebrated by the community, with hopes it will prevent future deaths. Local officials, including Rep. Joe Pavlov, plan to push for a state version of the law, drawing on their own personal losses to support the cause.

Local Sheriff Mat King explained that the detainees face charges beyond immigration violations. The jail’s involvement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has grown since the Trump administration ramped up immigration enforcement. Despite challenges, the county earned $2.6 million in ’24 for housing detainees.

Measles Outbreak Traced to Gathering

A measles outbreak in southwestern Ontario has been traced back to a Mennonite gathering in New Brunswick last fall. The virus spread when attendees unknowingly brought it home, leading to 223 confirmed cases. Most cases are in unvaccinated individuals, with health officials linking the outbreak to under-immunized Mennonite and Anabaptist communities. Authorities urge vaccinations, allowing infants as young as six months to receive early doses. Measles can cause severe complications, including brain damage. A child in Hamilton died last year.
