Brown City Housing Project Approved

At last week’s Sanilac County meeting, commissioners approved a major housing redevelopment plan in Brown City, despite one commissioner’s objection. The project by Maple Valley Estates LLC will transform nearly 13 acres on Maple Valley Road into 70 new homes, half for sale and half for rent, including 11 income-restricted units. Construction is set to begin in summer of ’28. Meanwhile, the county also ended the contract of Parks Director Vincent Micallef, just two months after his hiring, with no clear explanation given.

Holland Beach Opened for Swimming

Holland Beach in Port Huron is once again open for swimming. The St. Clair County Health Department lifted its July 17 advisory after fresh test results confirmed E. coli levels are now within Michigan’s safe limits. The warning had been issued due to high bacteria levels, often caused by stormwater runoff and strong waves stirring up contaminants. After days of monitoring and additional water samples, health officials confirmed the water is safe, and the beach is cleared for public use. Swimmers are urged to stay aware during heavy rains, which can trigger future advisories.
