After the holidays, Michigan residents are encouraged to recycle their live Christmas trees instead of tossing them in landfills. According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, trees can be repurposed into wildlife habitats, brush piles, or mulch—if they’re pesticide-free and decorations are removed. Brush piles provide shelter for small animals, while mulched trees enrich garden soil. Farmers with chickens or goats can also repurpose trees, as chickens roost on them and goats enjoy chewing the branches.
