MDHHS Extends Medicaid Beneficiaries Deadline

Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced a crucial extension today, granting Medicaid beneficiaries an extra month to submit renewal paperwork and avoid losing their health care coverage due to non-response. The extension will be in effect monthly until May 2024 and applies to those facing the Monday, July 31 deadline.

MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel emphasized the agency’s proactive approach to support Medicaid recipients in meeting renewal requirements. Preserving health benefits for qualifying residents remains their primary objective, and they will leverage all available options to achieve this.

This action comes as part of MDHHS’s ongoing efforts to safeguard Medicaid and Healthy Michigan Plan eligibility in the wake of COVID-19 resumptions. The MDHHS will collaborate with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to postpone procedural terminations in the coming months, ensuring beneficiaries have adequate time to complete and submit necessary paperwork.

Thumb Food Policy Council Launches Local Food Purchase Agreement To Provide Fresh Produce To Seniors And Families

After months of planning, the Thumb Food Policy Council is all set to inaugurate their ambitious Local Food Purchase Agreement project. This initiative aims to procure locally grown produce directly from farmers in the Thumb region. The program will collaborate with community partners to deliver bagged produce on a weekly or biweekly basis, focusing on reaching out to seniors and families with children in the area.

No sign-ups are required, as established community partners such as the Human Development Commission (HDC) and Council on Aging will take charge of distributing the produce either through direct delivery or transportation systems.

Funded by the USDA and administered through the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), this project will leverage the growing seasons of both this year and 2024 to provide fresh, locally sourced produce to those in need.

Port Huron Embarks on Phase I Signage Project for Downtown Revamp

In a bid to give downtown Port Huron a fresh facelift and improved navigational experience, the city has commenced Phase I of its new signage project. The initiative involves replacing all wayfinding signs in the downtown area, along with parking lot signage, destination markers, and the downtown kiosk situated at Huron Ave and Quay Street.

The outdated and faded signs that have served the city for years will be swapped out with modern, eye-catching markers. The installation process is already underway, and authorities estimate it will be completed within a couple weeks.

The city council greenlit the $106,537 project in November 2022, showcasing its commitment to enhancing the city’s appearance and functionality. Additionally, a proposal for Phase II, encompassing signage throughout the entire city and parks, will be presented to the council in their upcoming August meeting.
