Downtown Port Huron

Get Nostalgic With Andy’s Wine Bar

Some Blue Water Area residents didn’t feel like it was truly Christmastime until they had their first Tom & Jerry at the Brass Rail in Downtown Port Huron.

Andy Bakko, owner of Andy’s Wine Bar, is bringing back that tradition by featuring the drink at a special holiday event on December 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th.

Drinks will be served starting at 5 PM on those nights, and there will be heated tents set up outside the wine bar located at 104 Water Street near Desmond Landing in Port Huron.

Sales are cash only to keep things moving, and the original Brass Rail staff, including Di, will be on hand to serve up the Tom & Jerry’s. Wine, beer, and sprits are available as well, and guests are encouraged to dress warmly and bring a chair if they’d like to sit down.

Pottery for Everyone at Foundry

If you’ve ever wanted to take a pottery class, now is your chance. Foundry, Port Huron’s home for creators, has several pottery options in October for beginners on up.

Denny Snyder and Mark “Pappy” Brandt have been working hard to get the pottery studio at the former Studio 1219 rebooted to fit Foundry’s mission to connect local artists in a comfortable and inspiring atmosphere.

October’s classes mix traditional weekly beginning classes where students learn to use the wheel with “Just for Fun” nights and ceramic pumpkin carving classes. On Saturday, October 16th, there is an outdoor pottery experience where participants make RAKU Jack-o-Lanterns.

“This is a really cool process like the one we did last November on our big opening,” said Snyder.

They will have a bunch of pre-made Jack-o-Lanterns, skulls, ghosts, and maybe even a few Christmas trees that participants can pick out and paint. The RAKU process involves popping the piece into an open fire and then cooling it in a trash can. The whole process takes about an hour.

“It’s a really cool unique thing that you can’t really do anywhere else around here in the area,” said Snyder. “It’s instant gratification because you can do it and take it home that night.”

Classes are available for all ages, and booking is online at Foundry’s website <HERE>.

Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Unveiled Saturday

The Tuskegee Airmen Memorial located at the International Flag Plaza near the Blue Water Bridge will be unveiled this weekend in a dedication ceremony. The ceremony on Saturday, August 28th at 10:30 AM is open to the public and does not require registration.

The Tuskegee Airmen of WWII were initially trained at the Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama, and the 332nd Fighter Group also received Combat Crew Training at Selfridge and Oscoda Army Airfields. This special group of African American airmen fought for their beliefs in a segregated army, and their dedication and example paved the way for the integration of the military.

The group Diving With a Purpose discovered wreckage in Lake Huron and the St. Clair River of accidents involving Tuskegee Airmen. Five airmen perished in accidents in the Port Huron Area, and the new memorial commemorates the men and celebrates their military careers.

Exhibits will be on display throughout the weekend at the Port Huron Museum Carnegie Center, and the memorial will serve as a lasting reminder of these brave airmen.
