Safety Training Planned for Port Huron Schools

The staff at Port Huron Schools will be participating in Active Assailant Response Training on January 14th. Students will have a half-day of school that day with early dismissal and bus pick up around lunchtime.

Superintendent Theo Kerhoulas sent an email to district families on Tuesday to let them know about both the schedule change and the staff training.

Kerhoulas wrote, “We are very proud of our current district safety plans but also know we can always do better. Our teams feel we can strengthen what we do in the case of an emergency with additional training.”

Kerhoulas explained that the Port Huron schools team met with local law enforcement to discuss school safety and the Active Assailant Response Training will be done in partnership with the Port Huron Police Department and the St. Clair County Sheriff Department.

Kerhoulas said in the letter to families and staff, “Our efforts will strengthen our protocols and communication systems for our students, staff, law enforcement officers and emergency responders.”

Parents should expect more details about the January 14th early dismissal when the students are back in school next week.

What’s Your Favorite Christmas Cookie?

Cookies are hot right now. Bev Taylor, the owner of Port Huron’s Royal-T Cakery, said that cookies are flying off the shelves of her bakery.

When asked what the most popular cookie is this year, Taylor said sugar cookies are all the rage. Usually, chocolate chunk cookies are the most sought-after, but everyone seems to want sugar cookies during the holiday season.

Blue Water Area consumers are just slightly different from the national trends when it comes to cookie preferences, according to a recent survey from YouGov.

Nationally, chocolate chip edges out sugar cookies, with fudge coming in third. Whether or not fudge is a cookie is a debate for another time.

Those peanut butter cookies with the Hershey’s Kiss in the center have been a holiday staple for at least 50 years and they are near the top of the list this year as well.

Toward the bottom of the list are old standbys like jam print cookies and pfeffernusse. While most cookies are a variation of the mixture of butter and sugar and flour, throwing in flavors like anise and chai will land the cookie at the bottom of the list, where chocolate tends to land the confection at the top.

Wyatt Walker Friendship Fund Helps Enrich the Lives of Local Youth

The Wyatt Walker Friendship Fund is enriching the lives of young people throughout the area. Recent donations to both Port Huron Northern High School and Discovery City at Port Huron Museums’ Carnegie Center are continuing the legacy of the late Wyatt Walker.

Gayle Walker said that she and her husband, Mark, truly believe that programs involving young people are the best investment of their time and money. The Wyatt Walker Friendship Fund was started in 1999 to honor the memory of the Walkers’ son, Wyatt. Walker said that the projects they fund are things that Wyatt would have loved.

Through the Community Foundation of St. Clair County, the Fund awarded grants to enrichment programs at Port Huron Northern High School this year. There was money left over and they decided to gift it to the Museums to help pay for Wednesday Mornings with Miss Michelle at Discovery City.

Mrs. Walker said that the fund looks for things that “build kindness, doing for others, and reaching out and helping”.

Sheriff’s Office Raises Money for YMCA during “No-Shave November”

No-shave November has come and gone, but the money raised from the event will last for a long time. The Office of the St. Clair County Sheriff challenged its staff to give their razors the month off and raise money for charity.

The hairier than usual employees of the Sheriff’s Office dedicated their fundraising to men’s health awareness. The YMCA of the Blue Water Area was this year’s beneficiary of the fundraiser.

Sheriff Mat King presented a total of $2495 to Josh Chapman, President and CEO of the YMCA of the Blue Water Area.

The YMCA was chosen because of its commitment to men’s health and its wide range of programming, including fitness classes, lifestyle classes, and programs for those living with chronic diseases, like cancer.

No-Shave November started as a national movement to draw attention to cancer prevention. Cancer patients often lose their hair during treatment, and the obvious signs of ungroomed facial hair are meant to spark conversations about cancer screenings and prevention like exercise and lifestyle changes.
