Boating Safety App is Helpful Tool

With so many options for enjoying our lakes and rivers, water safety should be a priority in the Blue Water Area. The U.S. Coast Guard has an easy to use safety tool that may help in case of an emergency on the water.

The U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety App includes features to keep boater’s safe, help them report problems, and file float plans with the Coast Guard. Available through the App Store and Google Play Store, the free app is helpful for boaters of all types.

One feature allows water-goers to file a float plan that documents their planned trip with the Coast Guard. Before leaving the shore, boaters, kayakers, and paddleboarders can file the float plan on the app. If something happens and they do not arrive at their destination, the float plan could be a valuable asset for locating them.

The app also allows the user to report suspicious activity and hazards they notice on the water and contact the U.S. Coast Guard for assistance.

Blue Water Race Series Gets Started this Weekend

The Blue Water Race Series kicks off its second season this weekend with the Artful Dodger Race in St. Clair. The Race Series consists of six running races that span June to December of this year. Those who participate in all six events not only have a major athletic accomplishment to be proud of but can earn a commemorative jacket.

The races in this year’s series include summer, fall, and winter runs. The summer races start with the St. Clair Artful Dodger this weekend and the Algonac Pickerel Run on the 4th of July. The fall races are the P.S. You’re My Hero run in Port Huron on September 19th and the Run for Recovery in Port Huron on October 9th.

November brings the Friendsgiving Tyler Kreitler Memorial Run in Marine City, and the Jingle Bell Run in Port Huron.

Runners get to choose between 5k and 10k options for most races. There are usually one-mile walks as well.

McLaren Port Huron’s May Employee of the Month

Port Huron, MI – Theresa Pokorny has been named the Employee of the Month for May. Pokorny has worked at McLaren Port Huron for five years and is currently a registered nurse on the observation unit.

Pokorny was nominated by her peers because she embodies the hospital values. She is an advocate for patients, listening to their needs and concerns and taking action to help. Pokorny is dedicated not only to her patients, but to her job as well. She is a great team player and always willing to help. She is reliable, cheerful, has a positive attitude and is a great communicator.

This employee recognition is given to individuals who consistently live the values, mission and performance standards of McLaren Port Huron. Honorees are nominated by a co-worker, physician, volunteer, and/or customer.

DTF Seizes Over $23K of Meth

An investigation into the sales of crystal methamphetamine by the St. Clair County Drug Task Force ended with the seizure of $23,500 worth of the drug.

According to Sheriff Mat King, the investigation led to a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle in the village of Capac around 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night.  A large amount of crystal meth was located inside the vehicle, driven by a 34 year old Lynn Township man. He was taken into custody without incident and a search warrant was then executed at a residence in the 6500 block of Sterling Road in Lynn Township.  The search led to the location and seizure of more crystal meth, along with a rifle, digital scales and packaging materials.

The man was lodged at the St. Clair County Intervention and Detention Center. He is expected to face drug and weapons charges at his arraignment in 72nd District Court.

The Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, Port Huron Police Major Crimes Unit, Capac Police Department and U.S. Border Patrol K-9 Unit also assisted at the scene.

It’s Time to Nominate the Yard of the Year

Does your neighbor deserve the coveted yellow tulip for their stunning landscaping skills? It’s time to nominate your favorite homeowner or business for the City of Port Huron Beautification Commission’s Yard of the Year contest.

Nominations can be submitted to the Port Huron City Clerk through mail by writing the nominee’s name and address on a sheet of paper or by filling out the nomination form available <HERE>. You can also email nominations to beautifyph@porthuron.org.

The Beautification Commission selects members from the local Master Gardeners group to judge the nominees. Residential winners are recognized with a wooden yellow tulip to place in front of their homes. Business owners or nonprofit winners receive a plaque.

Nominations must be submitted by July 15, 2021 and judging takes place from the street at the end of July.

Students Win Tuskegee Airmen Essay Contest

Port Huron, MI — Three middle school students in the Port Huron Schools earned awards for their essays about the Tuskegee Airmen.

First place went to Michael Decker from Fort Gratiot Middle School, second place went to Ashton Richards from Central Middle School, and third place went to Lauryn Warner also from Central Middle School.

Port Huron School District middle schoolers had the opportunity to learn about the Tuskegee Airmen in class, and the essay contest was hosted in partnership with the committee for the Memorial for the Tuskegee Airmen, which is led by Port Huron City Councilwoman Anita Ashford and the group Diving with a Purpose.

The essay contest winners won awards ranging from $100 – $250 and will be officially recognized at the dedication ceremony for the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial on August 28th.

The goal of the memorial is to bring national attention to the accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII and to memorialize the pilots who perished in accidents in the Port Huron area. The memorial will be placed next to the International Flag Plaza along the St. Clair River near the Blue Water Bridge.
