Secretary Of State Jocelyn Benson Highlights Resources For Older Driver Safety Awareness Week

In observance of Older Driver Safety Awareness Week from December 4th – 8th, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is urging Michigan residents to explore resources provided by the Michigan Department of State (MDOS) for continuous education on safe driving at any age. 

Emphasizing the importance of road safety, Benson encourages older drivers and their families to visit Michigan.gov/AgingDriver for valuable resources. The Safe Drivers Smart Options website offers information to empower and guide older drivers, promoting safe transportation planning. 

According to May 2023 MDOS data, almost 25% of Michigan’s 7.34 million licensed drivers are aged 65 or older, with approximately 383,000 drivers aged 80 or above. The initiative aims to keep older drivers engaged in the community while prioritizing road safety.

Blue Water Developmental Housing Holds Detroit Red Wings Fundraiser

On January 11th, 2024, at 7 p.m., the Detroit Red Wings will play a crucial game against the Edmonton Oilers at the Little Caesars Arena for a special fundraiser. The event aims to raise funds for Blue Water Developmental Housing, Inc. 

Tickets are for Section 101, and are priced at $130, plus transaction fees. Purchasers will not only witness an exciting game but will also receive a complimentary t-shirt to wear at the event. The first 56 ticket buyers stand a chance to ride on the exclusive party bus, while the first 150 will receive a swag bag. All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Blue Water Developmental Housing, supporting employee education and emergency funds. 

Fun Fact: Port Huron native, Jack Campbell, plays the goalie position for the Oilers.

Cawood Auto And The Athletic Factory Join Forces For ‘Share Joy Christmas Toy Drive’

In the spirit of giving, Cawood Auto and The Athletic Factory have teamed up for the Share Joy Christmas Toy Drive, welcoming donations of new and gently used toys. 

The drop-off location at Cawood Auto, located at 2516 Pine Grove Avenue, Port Huron, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. The deadline for donations is December 15th.

All contributed toys will be distributed locally, ensuring that the joy of the holiday season reaches families in need. This heartwarming initiative is sponsored by Cawood Auto, and The Athletic Factory, uniting the community to make this holiday season brighter for children in the Blue Water Area.

Graduating high school students in Michigan can now access up to $4,000 over two years to enroll in eligible career training programs. 

To qualify, applicants must be Michigan residents, high school graduates or equivalency achievers in 2023 or later, and without a prior associate or bachelor’s degree. Port Huron Police Enforce Winter Parking Ordinance To Facilitate Snow Removal

As winter descends upon us, the Port Huron Police Department issues a reminder to local residents: the City’s snow ordinance takes effect on Friday, December 1st. Parking on paved city streets is prohibited from 2:30 a.m. – 6:00 a.m. until March 31st, 2024, facilitating efficient snow removal.

During the initial 5 days, warning notices will serve as reminders. Subsequently, violators risk a $23.00 citation. The enforcement aims to ensure smooth snow-clearing operations and maintain safety on the city streets. Residents are urged to comply with the ordinance to avoid penalties and support the city’s efforts in keeping the streets clear during the winter season.

Magical Evening With Santa In The Park: A Southside Initiative Celebration

The holiday spirit will shine brightly in Port Huron as the Southside Initiative, in collaboration with the Port Huron NAACP Youth Branch, presents a festive evening with ‘Santa in the Park.’ 

From 6:00 to 7:30 pm, families can enjoy enchanting activities sponsored by community partners, including face painting, delectable treats crafted by Santa’s elves, lively music by DJ Don, and a heartwarming story session with Santa himself.
