High School Students Recognized And Awarded By The Ottawa Chapter DAR

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a lineage society organized in 1906 whose members share a love of country and a rich heritage. The members are lineal descendants of a patriot who gave aid or was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. 

Daughters of the American Revolution are dedicated to preserving American history, securing America’s future through better education, and promoting patriotism. 

They have recently recognized four local high school students who qualified for the DAR Good Citizen and Youth Citizenship Awards. The students were nominated by their school counselors and teachers. 

Winner of the Good Citizen Award is Matthew Zammit of Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School who was awarded $300. The other three students are Tyler Jamison (Port Huron Northern), Tyler Chisolm (Cross-Lex), and Jeremy Matthieu (Port Huron Northern) who each received a medal for the Youth Citizenship Awards.

Join BWROC Partners In Recovery To Help Change Lives In The Community

The Blue Water Recovery & Outreach Center (BWROC) is asking for the community to help join in the fight against addiction by becoming a “Partner in Recovery” by supporting their cause financially.

BWROC helps those seeking recovery from addiction through one-on-one recovery coaching, recovery events, and recovery support by offering a safe, non-judgemental environment and empowering the individual.

The Partners in Recovery program is a monthly program that asks donors to contribute a dollar amount of their choosing that will be deducted from their debit card or bank account each month. Each partner will receive a special BWROC Partner in Recovery t-shirt along with special thank you’s and pop-up donor events. 

The first pop-up event will take place on Monday, May 5th, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at BWROC, located at 617 10th St, Port Huron.

YMCA Program LIVESTRONG Helps Recovering Cancer Survivors

The American Cancer Society estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases and 609,000 cancer related deaths in 2021 in the U.S. There were also 1.9 million survivors. The YMCA of the Blue Water Area offers a program to help those who are survivors, as well as those who are currently battling the effects of cancer. 

Their LIVESTRONG program focuses on the client. It offers a free, 12-week program that meets for 90 minutes two times per week. They offer exercise methods to help restore fitness and lectures on wellness and other topics to help survivors recover their health and strengthen their emotional fitness.  

LIVESTRONG’s Disease Prevention Coordinator, Sheila Volker says, “The program’s value to our community is that it helps our participants reclaim their health and well-being following a cancer diagnosis.”

The LIVESTRONG program is just one of the many programs offered by the Blue Water Area YMCA, and another reason to donate to the YMCA, as they depend upon the generosity of the community to keep these programs in place.

Local Organization And Mayor Pauline Repp To Honor Victims Of Crime This Week

Each day there are individuals who become victims of crime. Some lose their lives, and the lives of those that survive may be forever altered. 

This week of April 23 – 29 is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, and local organization, P.S. You’re My Hero, will be hosting an event to honor victims of crime.

On Wednesday, April 26th, beginning at 3 p.m., they will be gathering in the City of Port Huron at the St. Clair County Courthouse located at 201 McMorran Blvd, Port Huron.

The event will feature heartfelt words from Mayor Pauline Repp along with Victims’ Rights Supporters, followed by a walk to the St. Clair River to toss in flowers in honor of those who lost their lives due to violent crime.

New Skatepark At Optimist Park Will Celebrate With Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

If you live in the City of Port Huron you may have seen the construction of a new skate park at Optimist Park over the past few months. The project is now complete and getting ready for their grand opening and ribbon cutting. 

The new skatepark will feature state-of-the-art equipment and ramps for local skaters to perform all sorts of tricks and stunts. 

The huge project, which has been in planning since 2018, was made possible through the partnership of organizations such as The Skatepark Project, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, Community Foundation of St. Clair County, Advia Credit Union, private investors/donors, and many others.  

On Saturday, May 20th, they will have their grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. at Optimist Park located at 1400 Whipple Street, Port Huron.
