Free Skin Cancer Screening Offered By Port Huron Medical Center

Melanoma is one of the most common forms of cancer in the U.S. It can be treated successfully if detected in its early stages, Lake Huron Medical Center is offering residents a free skin cancer screening coming in the month of May.

Lake Huron Medical Center, in partnership with Hamzavi Dermatology, will be offering its free melanoma screening on Wednesday, May 10, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. It will be held on the North Campus of Lake Huron Medical Center located at 2601 Electric Ave, Port Huron. 

Lake Huron Cancer Center are leaders in cancer care and have been recognized for providing high quality patient care for over 40 years.

empowHER. Sold-Out Event Is Coming To Inspire And Uplift Women In the Blue Water Area

What started as an Instagram page to inspire women has become a sold-out women’s empowerment conference, and it’s coming to the Blue Water Area later this week. 

The empowHER. conference will begin Sunday, April 16th, at the Blue Water Convention Center located at 800 Harker St, Port Huron. Doors open at 11am.

Founder of the empowHER. conference Demiree Fultz, is also owner of Ruboo Boutique which was awarded best boutique in Michigan in 2021. 

The event will feature six guest speakers from a variety of professions that will be sharing tips and secrets to give women insight on how to become more successful in business and life in general. There will also be music played from guest DJ Rue, swag bags filled with goodies from amazing women business owners, photo ops, appetizers, and more.

Griswold Street In Port Huron Closed Due To Construction

It’s construction season again, and the residents of Port Huron are facing detours due to construction taking place on one of its main streets.

The City of Port Huron began construction on April 10th, which involves Griswold Street from Military Street thru 24th Street. Funded by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the City of Port Huron’s street and utility funds, the project involves water main replacement and street resurfacing. The project is expected to be completed by November 2023.

Griswold will be closed to thru traffic from 6th Street thru 16th Street until September 2023. Parking within the north parking lane of Griswold Street from 6th Street to 16th Street will be prohibited. In the meantime, the public is expected to follow the posted detours or use alternate routes.

SC4 Softball Games WIll Be Featured On ESPN+

It’s not everyday that your local community college sports teams get to be featured on ESPN. The St. Clair County Community College (SC4) Skippers wants you to tune in and support as they feature on ESPN+ later this month.   

As part of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Game of the Week streaming broadcast, the Skippers will be taking on Macomb Community College as well as Henry Ford College. 

Games against Macomb will take place Friday, April 21, at 3 and 5 p.m., and Henry Ford on Saturday, April 22, at 1 and 3 p.m. Both games will take place at the SC4 Softball Field in Marysville.

Port Huron Schools Wants You To Nominate Your Favorite Teacher For Upcoming Award

Our teachers and educational staff deserve much recognition and praise for helping to teach and educate our children on a daily basis. Now the community can make their voice heard as they vote for their favorite teachers in the upcoming, 9th Annual 2023 Advocator, Innovator, and Educator of the Year Awards.

Parents, students, and fellow staff are encouraged to nominate someone they feel is deserving, and exhibits the best in our district’s mission actions. 

The winner will receive a one night stay at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Port Huron, $300 gift cards provided by Insurance Specialists Agency of Marysville, gift certificates from Port Huron Downtown Development Authority, as well as a $25 gift card from Fort Gratiot Meijer.

The deadline to vote is Friday, April 28. Teachers will be surprised in their classrooms May 8th.

Meijer Recalls Premade Salads Due To Possible Listeria Contamination

If your idea of a perfect meal includes a premade salad from retailer Meijer, you may want to reconsider due to a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall is part of a broader Revolution Farms lettuce recall and includes the Fresh From Meijer premade salads. There are six known states that are recalling their product including: Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. 

There are currently no known illnesses reported from any Meijer brand salad products included in this recall.

Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems.  

Symptoms include: high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. 

If customers would like a refund they may make a request at the Meijer Customer Service desk at their nearest location. If you have ingested this product and show symptoms, visit your physician immediately.
