67th Annual Robinson Tennis Tournament Kicks Off In Blue Water Area

The 67th Annual Robinson Tennis Tournament, the longest-running community tennis event in the U.S., is set to commence in the Blue Water Area. Drawing local players, along with others from across the country and Canada, the tournament promises a week of thrilling tennis from July 30th to August 4th. 

Festivities kick off with Warm-Up Clinics and a free Kid’s Play Day on July 30th at Sanborn Park and the Port Huron Tennis House. Matches begin Tuesday afternoon, culminating in a grand finale on Sunday night. Participants can enjoy food and vendor services throughout the event. 

Registration, which includes a t-shirt and entry to multiple events, opens June 16th and closes July 18th. Don’t miss out on the T-shirt Design Contest, with entries due by July 5th.

Port Huron Summer Programs Registration Opens May 2nd For Residents, May 3rd For Nonresidents

Starting Thursday, May 2nd at 8 a.m., residents of Port Huron can sign up for the city’s summer programs through the Port Huron Recreation Department. Nonresidents will have their registration window open at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 3rd. Thanks to a collaborative effort with neighboring townships like Fort Gratiot and Burtchville, residents from these areas can access Port Huron’s programs at the resident rate.

This summer, the Recreation Department is introducing 11 new programs catering to both adults and children. From adventurous paint sessions to water safety weeks and even SCUBA diving discoveries, the lineup promises a diverse and engaging experience. 

Alongside these new additions, beloved favorites like Rockin’ The Rivers and Summer Movie Nights are making a return, ensuring a fun-filled season for all participants.

Two siblings from the local area are poised to make a splash in the world of Pickleball as they gear up to compete in the esteemed U.S. Open Pickleball Championships

Mike Chargot and Cathy Martinek, a former WGRT employee who retired in 2020, have been selected to showcase their skills at the renowned tournament taking place in Naples, Florida on April 20th. 

Held at the East Naples Community Park, this event boasts the largest Pickleball facility globally and will see over 3,000 players from across the globe vie for victory. Chargot and Martinek are excited to represent their community and are determined to give their all as they aim for the coveted “gold medal” in this prestigious competition.

SC4 Men’s Basketball Season Ends With Grit And Sportsmanship At NJCAA Nationals

The journey of the St. Clair County Community College (SC4) Skippers men’s basketball team finished in a valiant effort at the NJCAA National Championship tournament in Danville, Illinois, concluding on Saturday, March 23rd. 

Despite a hard-fought match against Macomb, ending in a 94-84 defeat, the Skippers showcased resilience throughout the week-long tournament, facing formidable opponents from across the nation.

Tyler Hamilton led the charge for the Skippers, delivering an impressive 30-point performance, supported by Zaveon Little with 15 points. Notably, Head Coach Richard Field and his team were honored with the Best Sportsmanship Award, highlighting their exemplary conduct on and off the court. 

Finishing 8th in the nation, the Skippers concluded their memorable season with a commendable 27-8 overall record, leaving a lasting mark on collegiate basketball.

SC4 Skippers Basketball Teams Ready For Postseason Pursuit After Successful Regular Season

St. Clair County Community College (SC4) celebrates the successful regular seasons of both its men’s and women’s basketball teams. 

The men’s team, with a stellar 22-6 record and a #16 ranking in the NJCAA, gear up for the postseason. Fans can support them on March 5th as they face Schoolcraft College in the NJCAA Great Lakes District C Tournament. Free popcorn and bottled water await attendees as part of Fan Appreciation Night. 

Meanwhile, the women’s team clinched the MCCAA Eastern Conference league championship, marking their first title since 2014-15. They aim for the State Championship, beginning their journey against Southwestern Michigan Community College. Both teams aspire for national glory, eyeing spots in their respective NJCAA National Championship Tournaments.
