St. Clair County Woman’s Luck Wins $264K Michigan Lottery Jackpot

What a most wonderful time of the year, especially for an anonymous winner of the Fast Cash Jackpot from the Michigan Lottery.

The lucky winner purchased her winning ticket at Ray’s Market, located in Smith’s Creek. After playing a $20 Lucky 7’s Lottery game she won $14,838, but then she also matched the bonus jackpot number for $250,000 which then bumped her winnings up to $264,838.

To prove how lucky the winner is, she also won a $4million prize in 2017 after playing $30 on an instant ticket. “…I couldn’t believe I won again! I didn’t have as crazy of a reaction as I did when I won the $4million, but it was still an amazing feeling,” says the anonymous winner.

YMCA Programs To Beat The Winter Blahs

The cold weather has arrived, and with that comes snow days for students whenever the schools close due to inclement weather or driving conditions. No school means you’ll probably be listening to your children telling you how bored they are all day. Well the Blue Water YMCA is offering a few programs that will give them something to do on those snow days, as well as during the holiday breaks.

Students ages K – 6th grade can participate in the Holiday or Snow Day Camps if you’re looking for some indoor fun on the days kids don’t have school due to closings. From 7AM – 6PM students can participate in activities such as swimming, crafts, gym time, and snacks. The Holiday Camp would be available on all holiday breaks and the Snow Day Camp would be available on snow day closings.

To register for the programs it costs $31/day for members, and $32/day for non-members. Financial assistance is available. So, let’s keep our kids active this winter and let them experience the Blue Water YMCA with these programs.

Port Huron Schools To Abandon Current Mascots

The Port Huron Area School District has made the decision to do away with the mascots, and logos associated with some of their schools. The 2022 school year will be the last year that they will be used as they begin to look into alternative names and designs.

The Port Huron High “Big Reds,” Roosevelt Elementary “Little Reds,” and Michigamme Elementary “Little Chiefs” are deemed offensive or inconsiderate of the Indigenous and Native American people. There was a unanimous approval on the name change by Board members, which some may or may not agree with.

The deadline for the changes to take place is March of 2023, so that the school can use grant funding to pay for the redesigning and changes needed.

Winter Celebration Will Light Up Pine Grove Park This Week

There’s something about the holiday light displays that we all seem to love at this time of year. Pine Grove Park will have plenty of lights and holiday decor for the community to enjoy this Thanksgiving when they activate the lights at 5 PM.

From November 24th until Jan 2nd, the Winter Celebration display will be lit each day from 5 – 10 PM. Burn barrels will be available throughout the park for people to stop and find a bit of warmth while taking in the sights. There will also be photo opportunity stations available to capture the memories with family and friends.

The combined efforts of local businesses, sponsors, and organizations have made this year’s display bigger and better than the previous, with 41 businesses and organizations contributing compared to last years 34. The event is free for all to enjoy.

For businesses and groups wishing to participate or sponsor the Winter Celebration contact the Port Huron Recreation Department by email at: phrec@porthuron.org
