Citizens’ Police Academy Educates Residents In Law Enforcement

Our local law enforcement authorities have a difficult job, protecting and serving the community. To give residents a glimpse of what it takes to be a law enforcement agent, the Port Huron Police Department is offering the community the Citizens’ Police Academy 2023.

The goal of the program is to educate and teach local residents about the many areas and aspects of law enforcement. The classes will be taught by PHPD officers and will cover topics such as, crash investigation, traffic stops, evidence, criminal law, arrests, and many more. 

Classes will be held on Thursday nights from 6PM – 9PM, beginning March 16th – April 27th. The classes are free to those who wish to attend. Port Huron residents will be given priority, but those outside of the City of Port Huron are also encouraged to sign up. There is no cost or fee to attend. Registration deadline is February 23rd. 

Meetings will be held at the Dr. Edward G. Acheson Applied Technology Center located at 323 Erie St, Port Huron, MI.

SCCCMH Hosts Traveling Art Show

When people think of ways mental health is treated, most would think prescription drugs or other forms of conventional medicine. There are many ways to treat mental health, and many ways that those suffering with mental illness can express themselves. 

Beginning January 6th – 27th, St. Clair County Community Mental Health (SCCCMH) will be hosting the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan’s Traveling Art Show. The goal of  “Traveling Art Show VII” is to promote the recovery potential of art and to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness.

Art work provided by individuals who access CMH services statewide, will be on display at the main office located at 3111 Electric Ave. in Port Huron. The art work will consist of photography, two dimensional art such as drawings and paintings, as well as other mediums.

Community Foundation of St. Clair County Scholarship Applications Are Open

The secret to success for many, is to go to college and earn a degree in your preferred field of study. What if you would like to continue your education, but you just can’t afford the tuition fees and all the costs that come with it?

The Community Foundation of St. Clair County awards community members seeking scholarship funding with one of its many traditional and non-traditional scholarship funds. Currently the application window is open to individuals to apply for funding until March 13th. 

Eligible individuals include: HS/GED graduates of all ages and academic levels, freshmen or upperclassmen, as well as non-traditional/returning students. Schools and programs the funding can be used for include: colleges/universities, as well as skilled trade & vocational training centers in Michigan or out-of-state.

Self-Defense Class Partners With Local Nonprofit A Beautiful Me

With the increased awareness of human trafficking, it’s more important than ever for women and young ladies to pay attention to their surroundings and to practice some type of self-defense.

 International Academy of Macomb student, Katie Sorbie, has partnered with local nonprofit, A Beautiful Me to create a class with the goal of teaching girls how to prevent and/or escape a dangerous situation. There are two classes available to choose from, Saturday, January 21st, from 9:30AM – 3:00PM in Port Huron at A Beautiful Me Training and Empowerment Suite. There is also a class on Saturday, January 28th, from 9:30AM – 3:00PM in Clinton Township at the Macomb Intermediate School District. 

The classes are geared towards young women between the ages of 14 – 18, with classes being taught by police officers from the Shelby Township Police Department.

2023 International Silver Stick Tournament Is Coming To Town

Do you enjoy hockey and supporting the children in our community? If yes, then you need to check out one of the biggest sporting events coming to the Blue Water Area.

The 2023 International Silver Stick Tournament features children of all ages, from across the country, as well as Canada competing for their region. The tournament begins Thursday, January 5th, and will continue each weekend until Sunday, January 29th. 

The International Silver Stick Tournament consists of numerous AA and below “regional” tournaments held in the US and Canada. Teams will then advance to represent their region at the International Finals. The AAA teams involved in the tournament participate in Port Huron, Sarnia, or Whitby and are invite only. 

This year’s local games will be held at the Mcmorran Place Sports & Entertainment Center as well as Glacier Pointe Ice Complex. There is no admission fee to watch, so support our community and come check out the 2023 International Silver Sticks Tournament.

28th Annual WGRT Bridal Show Returns For 2023

If you or someone you know is planning a wedding this year, then you don’t want to miss “St. Clair County’s most elegant bridal show.” 

On Sunday, January 15th, from 12PM – 3PM, WGRT will be hosting the 28th Annual WGRT Bridal Show in partnership with Alexander’s Banquet Facility. For nearly three decades WGRT has brought people together that plan to get married, with businesses that provide wedding services of all sorts. 

A few of the businesses in attendance for the bridal show include: Amour Bridal, Twinspiration Boutique, and Majestic Heart Carriage Rides. St. Clair Travel will also be in attendance giving away a gift certificate for a Delta Vacation Honeymoon Romance Package, valued at $500. Tickets for the event are $5.
