Community Rallies to Equip Students

Nearly 1,000 local students will start the school year with the supplies they need, thanks to generous community support during The BIG Give. BWCA raised critical funds in just 24 hours, boosting their Backpack Giveaway and other youth programs. Organizers say the outpouring of support shows the community’s deep commitment to helping families. BWCA expressed heartfelt thanks to all who contributed, calling the response overwhelming and inspiring. A BIG thank you!

Early Morning Fire

Eight people were hospitalized after a fire broke out at an apartment on 10th Street in Port Huron early Tuesday morning. Fire crews arrived around 1:24 a.m. and brought the flames under control in 20 minutes. The fire was fully out after two hours. Victims suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to McLaren Port Huron and Lake Huron Medical Center. Firefighters from Fort Gratiot, Marysville, and Port Huron Township helped at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Memorial Day Weekend Events

From Port Huron to St. Clair, Memorial Day weekend is packed with free events and local flavor. Rockin’ in the Plaza brings live music to downtown St. Clair starting Thursday. Cruise season opens on the Huron Lady II, with 90-minute river tours all weekend. Saturday morning, Port Huron hosts its Blessing of the Boats on the Black River. Monday brings two parades: Port Huron’s at 11 a.m., ending in Pine Grove Park, and St. Clair’s at 2 p.m., with a ceremony at Memorial Park honoring fallen service members.

Shooting Near Pine Grove Park

Saturday evening near Pine Grove Park and Prospect Street in Port Huron, police responded to a shooting involving two people in separate cars. One person fired multiple shots at the other’s vehicle, but no one was hurt. The victim drove away safely. Police say this was a personal dispute with no danger to the public. The Port Huron Major Crimes Unit is investigating, and the suspect remains free. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police or submit an anonymous tip.

Driver Injured After Swerving to Avoid Deer

On Sunday afternoon in Elk Township, a 68-year-old woman from Croswell was injured while driving east on Peck Road near School Road. She swerved suddenly to avoid hitting a deer that ran into the roadway. This caused her Ford Explorer to cross the centerline and leave the road, ending up in a drainage ditch on the north side. Emergency crews quickly responded and transported her to McKenzie Hospital for treatment. Officials confirmed that neither alcohol nor speeding played a role in the crash. Local deputies and Sal’s Towing also assisted at the scene.

Namesake Horse Nearly Wins

In Port Huron, local baseball legend Jim Gosger nearly saw his namesake horse win big at Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. The horse surprised many by running a close second in the nine-horse race despite 15-1 odds. Gosger led much of the race but was overtaken at the last second by the favorite, Journalism. Jim watched from home with family, proud yet heartbroken.  Port Huron fans are eager to see what’s next for their hometown hero—on the track and off.
