Local businesses in Sarnia are being urged to speak out on how global tariffs are impacting day-to-day operations. The Lambton Business Collaborative is hosting a public forum on Tuesday, May 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gateway Room in the St. Clair Corporate Centre. Owners and managers can share firsthand how tariffs affect their costs, planning, and competitiveness. Public Comments Sought on Smith’s Creek Landfill

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is seeking public feedback on alleged violations at Smith’s Creek Landfill. Residents of Kimball Township have reported strong odors from the landfill causing headaches and nausea. EGLE issued seven violation notices between October of ’23 and July of ’24. The county has agreed to a $145,000 fine and will upgrade monitoring systems. A virtual public meeting is scheduled for May 29, with comments accepted until June 6.

United Way Raises $870K

The United Way of St. Clair County wrapped up its ’24 fundraising campaign at a special event marking its 100th anniversary. Campaign Chair Deb Johnson announced they raised $870,000, just shy of their $900,000 goal. Johnson, also the Executive Director of St. Clair County Community Mental Health, praised the community’s efforts despite economic challenges. The funds will support local initiatives like emergency housing, food assistance, and child abuse prevention.

Jasmine McNary, an agriscience educator in Sanilac County, has been named the recipient of this year’s Young Agriculture Employee Award. This prestigious honor recognizes Michigan farmers under 35 for their contributions to farming, leadership, and community involvement. McNary oversees a diverse livestock program at the local high school, including sheep, cattle, and chickens, while boosting student participation in agriculture. She aims to further grow student engagement in Farm Bureau and improve FFA competition results.

New Art Festival Mitton Village Sarnia

Sarnia’s downtown and Mitton Village will come alive August 16–17 for ARTPATH, a new self-guided art festival. Locals can explore ten creative “pods” on foot or by bike, with live art, performances, artisan markets, and hands-on fun.
