Michigan State Treasurer Warns To Be On The Lookout For Fake Letters In Collection Scam

Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) Director Julia Dale and State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks issued a warning to Michigan residents and businesses regarding scam letters circulating through the U.S. Postal Service.

Director Dale emphasized the need for businesses to differentiate between legitimate correspondence from the UIA and suspicious communications. She urged employers or third-party administrators to contact the agency if they had any doubts about payment requests.

The scam involves receiving a letter claiming an overdue state debt and demanding immediate contact through a toll-free number. The letter threatens property seizure if the debt is not resolved. The scam appears credible, utilizing personal information sourced from the internet and public records to deceive recipients into making payments to criminals.
