Saint Patrick’s Day Fundraiser

Get ready to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in style! On March 16th, from 5 to 7 p.m., the Museum Church at the Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum will host a fundraiser concert featuring local band ‘Ourselves’. Proceeds will benefit the Sanilac County Historical Society. Tickets are $5 for members and $10 for the public, with a cash bar available. Marlette Car Thieves Caught

After a string of car break-ins in Marlette starting February 11th, the Marlette Police Department tracked down two suspects. On February 16th, the suspects were seen rifling through unlocked vehicles on Chard and Church Streets, stealing valuables. With help from local security cameras, the police spotted the pair again the following night near Rogers and Morris Streets. After fleeing on foot, officers traced their steps to a nearby house on Fenner Street, where a search led to recovered stolen items. Charges are expected to be filed soon.

Lapeer Man Pleads No Contest to Murder Charge

Chadwick Mobley, 44, pled No Contest on Monday to charges of First-Degree Murder, Felony Murder, and Felony Firearm in Lapeer County for the ’11 killing of Andrea Eilber. Eilber was shot in the head at a relative’s home in Lapeer, and Mobley was identified through DNA evidence. After fleeing Michigan, Mobley was arrested in Montana and brought back to face charges. He’s set for sentencing on April 15th. A co-defendant involved in the case still faces trial. Mobley could be sentenced to life without parole.

National African American Read-In

To celebrate Black History Month, Port Huron Area Schools will host a National African American Read-In on Saturday, February 22, at Cleveland Elementary School. Students from grades 2 to 12 will read books by African American authors, with author Shayla Griffin attending to share her new book, Together: A First Book About Race for Awesome Kids. The free event starts at 10 a.m. The read-in promotes literacy and celebrates Black authors.

Transformer Fire at Power Plant

A fire broke out Monday afternoon at Consumers Energy’s Karn Generating Complex in Hampton Township near Bay City, causing thick smoke and a mineral oil spill. The fire, which started in an electrical transformer, spread to nearby buildings, but all personnel were safely evacuated. Consumers Energy assured that there are no power interruptions expected, as the facility’s backup units, running on natural gas and fuel oil, are still operational. The mineral oil spill poses no risk to the public or the workers on-site.
