Pepper spray drift forces school evacuation

Students at Schall Elementary in Caro were evacuated Tuesday morning after pepper spray from the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office drifted onto campus during disposal of expired canisters. Children on the playground first reported burning eyes and throats before the smell spread inside the school. Local Police, Fire, and Rescue responded, treating several students on site while crews aired out the building. The sheriff’s office has apologized, saying it will review and improve disposal procedures to prevent another incident.

YMCA Bike Challenge Return

The YMCA of the Blue Water Area will host its annual stationary bike challenge Sept. 27th at McMorran Plaza from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Teams of four will race to log the most miles while facing fun roadblocks and surprises. The family-friendly event includes live music, local food and a spirit contest. Proceeds support the YMCA’s Open Arms Campaign, which funds youth programs, swim lessons and free meals in the community. Rain or shine, the event moves indoors to the YMCA Gym if needed.

Man Arrested in July Carjacking

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Huron County in connection with a July carjacking in Elkton. The victim, Austin Bieri of Bad Axe, told police the suspect held him at knifepoint in his Chevy Tahoe and forced him to withdraw cash from a local ATM before Bieri escaped at a stoplight. The stolen Tahoe was later found burned in a cornfield near the Elkton plant. Last Friday, Aron M. Laycock was arrested and faces charges of carjacking and tampering with evidence.

Port Huron Woman Charged in Deadly Shooting

A Port Huron woman faces serious charges after a deadly shooting on 10th Avenue. Police say Jennifer Goodall has been arraigned for open murder, felony firearm, and buying a pistol without a license. The victim, Chase Hoyt, died after being shot during a domestic dispute late last Wednesday night. Officers say an 11-year-old child was inside the home but was not hurt. Goodall was taken into custody at the scene and remains in the St. Clair County Jail as the investigation continues.
