Voters Headed To The Polls

Voters are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, May  7 to decide on a number of issues.  The East China School District is looking to approve a bond proposal that would raise $148.68 million.  The bond millage rate of 2.7 mills would increase the current amount levied by 1.7 percent.  If approved by voters, the bond would raise funds for renovations and a building consolidation plan, which includes the construction of a new connected middle and high school complex.  It would also include new furniture, updated learning environments, technology upgrades and security upgrades, including secure entryways at all the district’s schools.

Cros-Lex Community Schools are asking voters to consider a 0.9 mil sinking fund.  The fund would seek to raise about $4.9 million in revenue over 10 years. This would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $45 per year.  This would provide renovation of the high school’s boiler system, work on the middle school roof, work on unit ventilators and parking lot work at the middle school

Algonac voters will decide whether to renew an 18 mill non-homestead millage tax for Algonac Community Schools.   The ballot language includes a 0.5 mill increase in the tax. However, the district is prohibited by law from levying more than 18 mills. The 0.5 mill increase is intended to provide a buffer in case of a Headlee rollback

The St. Clair County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant in the city of Port Huron last Tuesday night.  According to Sheriff Tim Donnellon, the DTF was conducting an investigation into the sales of crack cocaine in the Port Huron area.  The investigation led to an apartment in the 1000 block of 10th Street shortly before 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.  Once inside, DTF members located and seized crack cocaine, a digital scale and drug paraphernalia.  A 42 year old Port Huron man was arrested at the home without incident and lodged in the St. Clair County Intervention and Detention Center.  He was expected to be arraigned last week in 72nd District Court on charges of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and being a habitual offender.

Tee Off Fore Kids 2019

Golf Season is upon us and the St. Clair County Child Abuse/Neglect Council will be hosting a charity golf outing at St. Clair Golf Club at 1714 River Road in St. Clair.  They are inviting the public to plan now to enter a foursome into the outing, donate an auction item or basket, become a sponsor of the event, or simply join in for dinner after golf.  Organizers say this outing is a four person scramble with a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start followed by dinner.  Early bird price is $400 for a team of four if paid by June 30.   The Child Abuse/Neglect Council provides child abuse prevention education in every elementary, middle and high school in St. Clair County, singular forensic interviewing of alleged child abuse victims, victim advocacy services and support groups to victims and their families.  Organizers say that fundraisers like this makes providing these services possible.
