Hershey Facing Lawsuit Over Unsafe Lead And Cadmium Levels

A class-action lawsuit is being filed against popular candy maker Hershey over reports of its dark chocolate candies containing high levels of lead and cadmium.

Christopher Lazazzaro has filed the lawsuit, with claims of deceptive and misleading marketing done on behalf of Hershey. A study showed that their products do in fact contain unsafe levels of the dangerous metals and may pose a serious health risk to consumers. Lazazzaro is seeking $5 million in damages.

The CDC says that these metals can build up in the body over time, and may cause issues such as kidney disease, fragile bones, and even cancer. Consumer Reports testing found one ounce of Hershey’s Special Dark Mildly Sweet Chocolate contained 265% of the level of lead, and 30% of the level of cadmium that California classes as the maximum allowable dose.

Popular Blood Pressure Medicine Quinapril Being Recalled

For many individuals, regulating their blood pressure with medication is a daily routine that allows them to live a normal functioning life. What happens when that same medication may be doing you just as much harm as it is good?

Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc. is recalling four lots of their blood pressure medication Quinapril, due to the presence of a nitrosamine impurity, N-Nitroso-Quinapril, observed to be above the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) level.

Quinapril Tablets USP 20mg, and 40mg, packaged in 90 count bottles has been distributed nationwide in the U.S. The recalled lot numbers are G102929 for the 20mg tablets, and G100533, G100534, and G203071. The recall is due to the impurity being known to increase the risk of cancer.

Child Support Changes May Increase Payments Received

Policy changes enabled by the state’s fiscal year 2023 budget may mean bigger child support payments received for some Michigan families.

Through a continuation of efforts on behalf of Gov. Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Human Health and Services (MDHHS), the budget allows low-income families that receive cash assistance and child support, to receive an additional $1.1 million this year.

Currently, MDHHS keeps a portion of all child support payments that are above what a parent would be paid, if that parent receives cash assistance. The money collected is used by the federal and state government to offset expenses used to fund the Family Independence Program.

With the new change coming in January 2023, the law permits states to “pass through” child support payments directly to the families instead of it being recouped for government expenses.
