Citizens’ Police Academy Educates Residents In Law Enforcement

Our local law enforcement authorities have a difficult job, protecting and serving the community. To give residents a glimpse of what it takes to be a law enforcement agent, the Port Huron Police Department is offering the community the Citizens’ Police Academy 2023.

The goal of the program is to educate and teach local residents about the many areas and aspects of law enforcement. The classes will be taught by PHPD officers and will cover topics such as, crash investigation, traffic stops, evidence, criminal law, arrests, and many more. 

Classes will be held on Thursday nights from 6PM – 9PM, beginning March 16th – April 27th. The classes are free to those who wish to attend. Port Huron residents will be given priority, but those outside of the City of Port Huron are also encouraged to sign up. There is no cost or fee to attend. Registration deadline is February 23rd. 

Meetings will be held at the Dr. Edward G. Acheson Applied Technology Center located at 323 Erie St, Port Huron, MI.

Community Foundation of St. Clair County Scholarship Applications Are Open

The secret to success for many, is to go to college and earn a degree in your preferred field of study. What if you would like to continue your education, but you just can’t afford the tuition fees and all the costs that come with it?

The Community Foundation of St. Clair County awards community members seeking scholarship funding with one of its many traditional and non-traditional scholarship funds. Currently the application window is open to individuals to apply for funding until March 13th. 

Eligible individuals include: HS/GED graduates of all ages and academic levels, freshmen or upperclassmen, as well as non-traditional/returning students. Schools and programs the funding can be used for include: colleges/universities, as well as skilled trade & vocational training centers in Michigan or out-of-state.

SC4 Has A Recent Trustee Vacancy That Needs To Be Filled

The St. Clair County Community College (SC4) Board of Trustees is currently one member short and they are looking for potential candidates to fill the position.

A long time member on the College Board of Trustees, Dr. Nicholas DeGrazia has resigned as of December 15th. DeGrazia has not provided an official statement on why he chose to step down unexpectedly, but did say via email that “after almost 14 years of serving on the board, it’s time.”

So, from now until Friday, December 30th, SC4 will be accepting applications from those who may be interested in filling the position. DeGrazia had been a member since 2009. The resignation comes shortly after reelecting incumbents Karen Niver and Bob Tansky, as well as newcomer Kim Brown serving her first term as trustee.

Senior Adults Have A New Way To Socialize This Holiday Season

A 2020 study has shown that 40 percent of adults 60 and older reported feeling lonely. These feelings of loneliness tend to get worse during the winter and holidays. 

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), along with the Library of Michigan are offering a new social learning platform for aging adults. GetSetUp classes allow them to connect with others from the comfort of their own homes. 

GetSetUp will also provide users with a variety of programs to help them become more fit, learn to manage their finances, develop new skills, and how to use and interact with new technologies such as social media and other platforms. A special “New Year, New Me” program will be running until 2023 to help users accomplish their resolutions in health and wellness, money and business, along with other categories. GetSetUp is available in a variety of languages such as English, Hindi, Mandarin, and a growing number of Spanish classes are becoming available.

Register For MIOSHA Training Institute Courses

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) is urging individuals interested in their January MTI courses to register as soon as possible.

MIOSHA is offering a variety of its MTI courses and training seminars that will provide individuals with further knowledge in protecting the health and safety of Michigan workers. There are three learning formats to choose from including: traditional classroom setting, online, or virtual classroom. 

All students attending MTI courses are eligible for scholarships that will pay 50% of the cost. A brief list of courses available include:

  • General Provisions
  • Asbestos and Lead Awareness
  • MIOSHA Record Keeping and Cost of Injuries
  • Health Hazards In Construction

Those interested should select a class that is more than three weeks away, but not more than three months away from today’s date.

TRIO-SSS Jingle & Mingle Event Coming To SC4

Would you be interested in a program that would support your high school student with financial benefits to enter college? You can learn more at the upcoming “Jingle & Mingle” event tomorrow at St. Clair County Community College (SC4). 

Jingle & Mingle is an event held by TRIO-SSS (Student Support Services) and will be located on the second floor lobby of the SC4 Welcome Center. Thursday, December 8th, from 10AM – 2PM, the event will be for those who are 1st generation college students, current members of the TRIO program, and for TRIO alumni.

Jingle & Mingle is designed to support current TRIO members as they prepare for finals, provide information for SC4 students who would like to learn more about TRIO, to celebrate TRIO alumni, and to share about the benefits of being a member. TRIO members receive benefits such as financial aid support, grant and scholarship opportunities, as well as all expenses paid college tours.
