#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s #GivingTuesday will take place on November 27th and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back. The YMCA of the Blue Water Area has joined in the global effort of #GivingTuesday for several years. Donations from past #GivingTuesday initiatives have been used to fund a number of YMCA activities including the Safety Around Water program. Donations are also used to fund scholarships, purchase new equipment, add additional programs, and build the endowment which will help us in the longterm. You can designate your gift or pledge in any of these areas.

The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS)  responded to the passage of Proposal 1 on Tuesday. The following is a statement from Dr. Betty S. Chu, MD, MBA, president of MSMS.  “Just because the recreational use of marijuana is now legal in Michigan, it does not mean marijuana is safe or healthy. Marijuana is still a Schedule 1 controlled substance which reflects the high potential for abuse and addiction.  The recreational use of marijuana harms our communities, families, and youth. Other states have already  experienced  the  sweeping  negative consequences associated with this sort policy, which include but are not limited to increased marijuana-related hospitalizations, traffic deaths and crime. Regardless of the legality of marijuana use here in our state, Michigan’s physician community will remain vigilant in working to educate and inform our patients and the broader public of the dangers associated with marijuana use.”  The Michigan State Medical Society is a professional association of more than 15,000 Michigan physicians. Its mission is to promote a health care environment which supports physicians in caring for, and enhancing the health of Michigan citizens through science, quality, and ethics in the practice of medicine. Please visit www.msms.org for more information.

Registration for winter semester classes at St. Clair County Community College is now open. There is no deposit required to register, and classes fill up fast. Students are encouraged to register as soon as possible in order to get the classes they need to complete their degree programs or successfully transfer to a four-year institution.   Now through Nov. 23, there is no payment required until the final due date of Dec. 7. Partial payments will be accepted through Dec. 6. From Nov. 24 to Jan. 11, full payment is required at time of registration.  New students can apply to SC4 at sc4.edu/admissions/starthere. Current students can register online in the SC4 Portal Service Center or on the SC4 mobile app. The winter semester begins Monday, Jan. 7.

Voters were at the polls yesterday with a full ballot.  Overall, Democrats gained control of the House and Republicans expanded their majority in the Senate.  In the city of Port Huron, Pauline Repp retained her seat as Mayor and Anita Ashford was re-elected for City Council.  Newly elected for council are Jeff Pemberton and Lisa Beedon.  Karl Tomion retained his seat on the St. Clair County Board of Commissioners District 2 – over contender, Laurie Sample-Wynn; Harry Dunn beat out James Papineau for District 4.  Joe Bixler and Lauire Oldford will take seats on the Port Huron Area School District Board of Education.  Bill Cedar retains his position as Mayor of St. Clair – In Marine City – Jacob Bryson, Wendy Kellehan and Cheryl Vercammen will serve as commissioners.  Debbie Stabenow stays in the U.S. Senate by just over 51 per cent of the vote,  Paul Mitchell received 60 per cent of the vote to remain a U.S. Congressman for District 10.  Michigan has a new governor in Gretchen Whitmer.  One of the most closely watched proposals, Michigan passed Proposal 1 with 57 percent of the vote, legalizing marijuana.  Both Proposal 2 and Proposal 3 passed as well, bringing sweeping changes to Michigan’s election law.  In the State House of Representatives, Gary Eisen won District 81, Shane Hernandez remains for District 83 and Dan Lauwers was elected for the state Senate in District 25
