TEC Students Win Big

Students from St. Clair County’s Technical Education Center (TEC) earned 19 medals at the recent SkillsUSA Michigan State Conference in Grand Rapids. Among the top achievers were Lucas Bauman and Allane Stamplis, who won gold in metal machining and welding, respectively. Their victories earned them spots at the national competition in Atlanta this June. A total of 67 TEC students participated in the event, showcasing skills in automotive technology, culinary arts, welding, and more.

Local Hero Honored

A local man, only identified as Michael, received a Citizen’s Award by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office for his actions during a January vehicle fire. Michael was driving on Lakeshore Road and noticed a car on fire near Wilkes Drive. With someone still inside, he quickly pulled over. Thanks to a fire extinguisher he had just placed in his car, Michael was able to control the flames long enough for help to arrive. His quick thinking likely saved the driver’s life.

Drought Relief Loans

In Huron County and nearby Sanilac and Tuscola counties, small businesses and nonprofits hit hard by last summer’s drought can now get low-interest federal loans. The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering these Economic Injury Disaster Loans to cover unpaid bills, payroll, and other costs caused by the drought from June to November. Farmers and ranchers aren’t eligible, but nurseries and aquaculture businesses are. These loans aim to help local businesses recover without needing physical damage to qualify.

High Winds Fuel Fire

High winds on Monday fueled a dangerous fire in Sanilac Township, forcing about 50 firefighters to respond. The fire started on Custer Road in Carsonville around 6 p.m., after smoke was spotted in the area. Firefighters from multiple departments, including Sanilac East, Carsonville, Deckerville, and Applegate, teamed up with emergency services and AERO squadron to battle the flames. By 9 p.m., the fire was under control with no injuries reported. Local authorities thanked all responders for their help.

Boat Week Kicks Off July 9th

Port Huron’s annual Boat Week will start with the Rotary International Day Parade at on July 9th. This year’s theme, “Color Our World,” encourages creativity and art, inspired by the national library summer reading program. The parade will begin at Huron and Glenwood avenues and end at Court Street, making it a bit shorter than previous years. McLaren Port Huron is the main sponsor. Parade participants and sponsors can register at paradeday.net. This event kicks off the countdown to the Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race on July 12th.
