Crash Kills Woman, Injures Husband

A deadly crash in Sebewaing Township left one Bay Port woman dead and her husband seriously injured last Wednesday afternoon. The couple’s SUV collided with a garbage truck on Sebewaing Road just after noon. The husband, 80, was pulled from the wreck and taken to a hospital before being airlifted out for further care. His 77-year-old wife was trapped and later pronounced dead at the scene. The 65-year-old Sebewaing truck driver was unharmed. Preliminary reports suggest the SUV driver may have fallen asleep, causing the crash.

Fort Gratiot Firefighters Honored

Fort Gratiot firefighters Chandler Martin and Mark Smith received the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award Tuesday for saving a local resident’s life after he went into cardiac arrest at home in February. The two performed CPR while EMS transported him, helping him make a full recovery. Both were given the Certificate of Extraordinary Personal Action and a lapel pin. Fire Chief Mark VanderFeyst praised their quick response as an example of the department’s dedication to the community. Smith urged locals to learn CPR, saying it can save lives.
